Veterans for American Ideals (VFAI), a project of Human Rights First (HRF), is a nonpartisan group of veterans who share the belief that America is strongest when its policies and actions match its ideals. VFAI has taken on the critical issue of police reform, including through the creation of two groups focused on developing solutions.


 


Rethinking Public Safety Working Group is a veteran-led group tasked with developing recommendations on police reform in America to reduce reliance on militarized training and tactics. It is designed to offer the veteran perspective on this issue and frame the conversation by engaging in narrative-based advocacy. VFAI members with a background in law enforcement, community advocacy, and the public defender community have been mobilized to participate in this working group.


 


Police Demilitarization Project


VFAI, in partnership with other likeminded organizations is working with municipal governments around the country interested in demilitarizing their law enforcement. This project has centered on the basic premise that solutions will largely be found at the local level. By using Human Rights Firsts expertise in this area, and a broad network of professionals, we working with policy makers around the country to test local legislative solutions to police demilitarization.  


 


Consultancy Overview


Human Rights First is seeking a consultant to provide strategic guidance and support to VFAIs police reform initiatives. The consultant will: 



  • Support staff in project managing HRFs Rethinking Public Safety working group and the Police Demilitarization Project;

  • Work with HRF staff and external partners to produce analyses, policy briefs, recommendations, press releases, blogs, social media content, and other materials to advance the projects objectives; 

  • In coordination with the VFAI and Communications teams, develop and implement a communications plan, including social media strategy; and

  • Serve as a point of contact for working group members and external partners.



The consultancy is expected to begin in early May 2021 and run through October 2021; it will require up to 15 hours per week.


 


Qualifications


The ideal consultant will have:



  • Professional communications experience, including with traditional media, such as placing op-eds, and social media

  • Military service and/or experience working with veteran groups

  • Demonstrated commitment to the project objectives
