The Education and Guest Services Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernons one million annual visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging public programs, and online resources, we expand each learners understanding of, and appreciation for, our nations Founding Father and the world in which he lived.

The Education and Guest Services team is composed of the Interpretation, Historic Trades, and Guest Services Departments. The K12 & Family Learning department is embedded in the central Education Admin department.


The department of K12 & Family Learning is designed to ensure that George Washingtons Mount Vernon is focused on creating and providing the best learning experiences available to young people in the world today. Key staff members in the department use their expertise to develop departmental programs and projects and to support other target audience initiatives on the estate, in the library, and nation-wide that magnify our missions impact.

The Education Administration department is designed to ensure cohesion and communication for interdepartmental and intradepartmental communication for the Education and Guest Services division. This is the hub for communicating to external and internal communities about Mount Vernons education work.

The work of the Teacher Learning Coordinator contributes to the extension of Mount Vernons mission to schools and classrooms around the country through the assistance in creation, development, implementation, and evaluation of George Washington Teacher Institute programming. This is a part-time position, with an expectation of 24 hours weekly. 

  • Expected salary for this role is $13.00 - $16.00/hour, dependent on skills and experience

Essential Duties:

Support the Manager of Teacher Learning with complex logistics and communications for a wide variety of short and long-term programs developed for K12 educators as part of the George Washington Teacher Institute. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Gather, organize, and track data, files, forms, orders, and other relevant program information

  • Organize, prepare, and set-up digital and printed resources, supplies, mailings, and other program materials

  • Assist in onsite and online program implementation including setting up digital and on-site environments, greeting speakers, guiding groups, and other hosting duties

  • Communicate regularly with staff, participants, outside vendors, and external partners via phone, email, and other digital platforms to support continuity of varied logistics across programs

  • Advise on systematic improvements, updates, or changes necessary to improve programming

  • Other tasks supporting Institute programs, including marketing, network building, and best practices research, as assigned


  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience in history, education, or administrative support

  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Ability to represent Mount Vernon in public settings (online and onsite)

  • Demonstrated ability to perform administrative and communication tasks.

  • Strong organizational skills; ability to track several projects simultaneously and to prioritize workload

  • Knowledge of computer programs and systems such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite Apps, and WebEx (or similar video conferencing system)

Special Requirements:

  •  Must occasionally travel, work non-traditional and additional hours as programs require
