Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the SURF+ Programming Assistant. The SURF+ Programming Assistant is a casual position, with no benefits. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Summer Programming Fellow of the SURF+ Program supports the 8-week on-campus program. Recent STEM graduates encouraged to apply.

The Summer Programming Fellow will be responsible for communications, event planning, and leading social activities for the SURF summer program . Academic events include Safety & Ethics Luncheon, Scientific Communication, Poster design, and poster presentation. Social events that are in compliance with COVID-19 regulations will be arranged by the Summer Programming Fellow! The Summer Programming Fellow will need to arrange events and activities on a few weekends and evenings.

The Summer Programming Fellow will help answer questions from SURF Fellows and serve as a liaison with program administrators during the course of the 8-week SURF program. The Summer Programming Fellow will encourage SURF students to attend programmatic and social events coordinated with the SURF planning committee (Science Center, IT, Writing Center, Library, among others). Towards the close of the SURF program, the Summer Programming Fellow will help to administer assessment surveys and assist students with their posters for the annual Summer Research Poster Session on the first Friday of the Fall 2021 Session.

The Summer Programming Fellow will take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Summer Fellowship includes salary, on-campus housing, and meal plan for 10 weeks starting May 31 culminating 8/6. SURF begins on campus (6/7) during a required quarantine period.

This is a term appointment, effective May 31 2021-August 6, 2021 (10 weeks)

Summary of duties and responsibilities:
SURF Program Support
  • Update the Slack and Moodle, keeping them updated with current information about the initiative.
  • Assist in planning SURF Incubator activities, meetings, and gatherings
  • Attends and serves as an activities leader
  • Creates a sense of belongingness and community in the program whenever possible
  • For summer 2021 , communicate and ensure compliance with campus policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Immediately report any violations to the Administrative Director or Student Affairs.
  • Bachelor's Degree from Amherst College
  • Commitment to or experience working with a diverse community
  • Able to take initiative, and work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Competence with Google Apps, Moodle, GroupMe, Slack
  • Ability to communicate and participate in an enthusiastic manner
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM
