Job Summary and Description:

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)’s Nuclear Sector has recently launched “Data Driven Decision Making”, a data science / Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative aimed at collaboration between the AI community, nuclear power industry, and EPRI’s subject matter experts. The initiative is looking for a Technical Leader to manage this initiative in the nuclear sector, provide expert advice to sector AI / data analytics projects, and be the primary interface between the nuclear sector and other entities at EPRI doing similar work.


A Senior Technical Leader at EPRI has the following primary job responsibilities:

• Plans, designs, and controls the progress of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports.

• Manages small to medium level projects without direct people management responsibilities.

• Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required.

• Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.

• Provides input into configuration management and documentation for engineer related projects.

• Leads proposal efforts and new promotional work.

• Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.

• Prepares proposals, technical publications, and delivers presentations.

• Leads national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.

• Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision.



• Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 8-10 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience.

• Ability to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects.

• Required limited supervision and guidance.

• Responsible for the success of individual projects.

• Works closely with members, contractors, staff to manage projects.

• Experience in successful proposal preparation, and marketing activities.

• Manages multiple projects.

• Responsible for project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer.

• Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Individual contributor.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Increasing technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert.


Specific job responsibilities for this position include:

  • Assist in development, and then primarily responsible for execution, of 3DM strategy.
  • Work with the EPRI technical team, members and other stakeholders to identify and document 3DM use cases, potential projects, and data sets.
  • Understand, document, and share the landscape of AI technologies and vendors that can provide solutions for nuclear power industry challenges; this includes collaboration with AI.epri.com and similar efforts outside nuclear.
  • Generation of "Quick Insights" summarizing current state of AI to EPRI team and members.
  • Ability to provide expert advice to AI & data analytics projects throughout the nuclear sector that are integrated with 3DM.
  • Assisting data stakeholders in ETL (extract, transform, load) processes.
  • Facilitating a process of sharing datasets with AI stakeholders for training of algorithms.
  • Managing, executing, and communicating results of 3DM projects.


Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering with 8-10 years of experience.
  • 4 - 5 years' experience as technical and / or project lead in a data analytics / AI / machine learning focused project or program.
  • Good understanding and previous experience of using machine learning for image classification, time-series analysis, and/or natural language processing.
  • Experience performing analysis on complex data sets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with SQL, databases, R, Matlab, Python (NumPy / SciPy) or similar tools for data analysis.
  • Experience with curation of datasets to develop training and evaluation data.


Additional Job Information: 

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
