Position Purpose

Execute a nimble, creative, and responsive social media program for Dartmouth College's Office of Alumni Relations designed to actively engage Dartmouth alumni, raise awareness of alumni offerings and events, generate inbound traffic, and grow community. Develop fun, engaging, and informative content specifically with Dartmouth alumni and friends in mind; cultivate relationships with bloggers and other influencers; identify and exemplify best practices in social media; and generate appropriate metrics to monitor social media outreach, impact, and trends. Create, identify, and secure content across various media to populate the Advancement Division's digital platforms.



Skills & Knowledge
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, juggle numerous posts simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proven abilities in research, comparative analysis, and writing (including spelling, punctuation, grammar and tight, high-quality prose composition).
  • Excellent knowledge of social media sites, trends, and analytics software.
  • Some level of availability for after-hours and weekend communications.
  • Ability to approach work from a creative and innovative standpoint.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a busy environment.
  • Judgment and discretion.
  • Keen interest in and understanding of higher education nationally.


Minimum Experience
  • At least three to five years of relevant social media and communications experience.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Must be an active user of Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms.
  • Experience with social media monitoring, publishing, engagement, and advertising platforms (such as HootSuite).


Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree with a focus on communications, public relations, journalism or marketing

Social Media Content Development

  • Work closely with the Managing Director of Alumni Relations Communications to develop and execute social media strategy and efforts across all Dartmouth Alumni platforms, including but not limited to: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
  • Communicate and reinforce Dartmouth College messaging through digital platforms.
  • Conceive and implement creative, interactive campaigns and tactics to spark interest in and engagement with Dartmouth Alumni.
  • Develop a consistent and engaging voice for social media platforms.
  • Cultivate and build an effective social media ambassador program.
  • Collaborate with Manager of Social Media in the Office of Communications and other campus partners to generate message volume and integration.
  • Attend, cover, and live-tweet alumni events as necessary.
  • Develop a social media editorial calendar.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

Metrics and Benchmarking

  • Employ social media metrics tools at a high level of expertise, set clear benchmarks and goals for social media activities, and develop analytics to measure our success.
  • Create reports based on those metrics and share on a regular basis with Advancement Communications leadership and other colleagues.
  • Grow number of followers and increase measurable engagement across all platforms.
  • Monitor new social media trends and benchmark against alumni offices and associations and peer and other institutions.
  • Recommend implementation of new platforms and discontinuation of current platforms based on best practices and metrics.

Digital Content Management and Production

  • Collaborate with Advancement Communications colleagues to secure photographers for both on-campus and off-campus alumni events.
  • Populate and maintain Dartmouth Alumni Flickr in a timely manner.
  • Assist in identifying new content that could be shared across digital platforms including social media and online properties.
  • Work with Advancement Communications leadership team to integrate new platforms into existing communications outlets.
  • Work with Advancement Communications design team to maintain Alumni Relations photos for photo asset management system.
  • Collaborate with web producer as needed and serve as backup for content management for alumni.dartmouth.edu.
  • Populate the Dartmouth Alumni mobile app with content as necessary.
  • Create and curate content, including feature stories, photos, and video, specifically for digital media.

Social Media Outreach, Professional Development, and Relationship Building

  • Identify opportunities for growth in the social media arena.
  • Develop relationships with alumni volunteers active on social media on behalf of their alumni organizations and identify opportunities for them to engage their constituents.
  • Monitors social media trends, applications, channels, design, and strategy and recommends them as appropriate.
