Job Description

Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

Fermilab's Facilities Engineering Services Section builds and maintains mission-critical infrastructure and services from which high-energy physics research can be safely accomplished without interruption. We provide housing accommodations and logistics and property management. We work on projects that support all of the laboratory's facilities and experiments.

Fermilab's Facilities Engineering Services Section seeks a motivated Senior Strategic Planner to lead and/or contribute to research activities and engineering work focused on radiation detector instrumentation.

You Will:
  • Coordinate lab-wide activities of engineering groups & sets priorities for engineering efforts
  • Negotiates critical & controversial issues with top-level engineers and senior management
  • Responsible for overall analysis of project team(s), recommending & overseeing the analyses and solutions of issues
  • Analyzes data and performs engineering calculations
  • Develops specifications, designs, and documents for major and technically complex, high-level and highly visible engineering projects and design solutions
  • Work involves a variety of complex and advanced engineering techniques
  • Plans and/or leads large or complex projects from inception to completion and brings them to operating status
  • Provides technical direction to draftsmen, designers, engineering associates, technicians or less senior engineers.
  • Identify problems or tasks requiring engineering solutions and provides a thorough analysis of alternatives
  • Participate in procurement, as well as manufacture, installation, testing and operation
  • Assist or lead in the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring and/or management of budgetary obligations
  • Review and approve work before hardware and financial resources are committed, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints
  • Enhance the national and international presence of projects or the Lab through participation in and collaboration on project reviews, as well as participation in technical conferences and publication
  • Serve on safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned
  • Contribute to setting lab-wide engineering policies, safety standards or technical standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Abide by and responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position

We Are Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in applicable Engineering Discipline from an ABET accredited institution along with 15+ years of engineering experience
  • Master's or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 12+ years of engineering experience
  • Advanced knowledge & proficiency in application of theories, concepts, principles, & methodology for engineering discipline
  • Extensive project planning skills/
  • Experience developing specifications & documents for major and technically complex projects
