Amgen is seeking a Senior Associate Data Scientist to be based in our Thousand Oaks, CA global headquarters, who will report to the Senior Data Scientist within the Amgen Digital Health & Innovation (DH&I) department.

The DH&I Data Science & Engineering (DS&E) team is seeking an experienced Senior Associate Data Scientist to advance our mission and help build machine learning models that can predict patients' risk for particular diseases, infer medicines that could be most efficacious for patients, along with other solutions that benefit patients. In this capacity, the Senior Associate Data Scientist will work on projects that touch across the entire value chain and hence offers the opportunity for the candidate to interact and learn from teams involved in Amgen processes ranging from R&D to Commercialization. Additionally, the Incumbent will collaborate in the development of AI/ML models for novel problems and be responsible for sharing these models with key business stakeholders.

To advance this mission, the DH&I Data Science & Engineering (DS&E) team incubates and applies digital technologies and data science across impactful problems such as predicting patients' risk for a particular disease or using data to determine the most effective treatment for individual patients with grievous illnesses. Primary Responsibilities for the Senior Associate Data Scientist include:

  • Work across Amgen business partners to identify, understand, explore, and deliver relevant data analyses to inform data inclusion, exclusion, and sub-setting criteria as well as feature and model selection for DH&I solutions
  • Perform data engineering to extract and create data features from large data sets for input into models
  • Analyze and select appropriate data models and algorithms that focus on improving patient outcomes across multiple therapeutic areas leveraging diverse data
  • Collaborate with machine learning engineers to define model validation strategies, train and tune models, and analyze and resolve errors in models
  • Present project results to key business stakeholders


Basic Qualifications:

Master's degree

OR

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of Computer Science and/or Business Analytics and/or Computational Biology and/or Bioinformatics and/or Informatics and/or Epidemiology and/or Health Economics and/or Math and/or Statistics and/or Data Science experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Business Analytics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Informatics, Epidemiology, Health Economics, Math, Statistics, or similar field
  • Proven ability to write robust code in Python (open-source contributions or Kaggle kernels are a plus)
  • Strong understanding of linear algebra, probability, statistics, and machine learning algorithms
  • Demonstrated experience in feature selection, dimensionality reduction, and model development
  • Proficient understanding of distributed compute / data processing technology (e.g. Apache Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Arrow)
  • Hands-on experience using Databricks or Apache Spark (i.e. PySpark, SparkR, or Scala) and understanding best practices
  • Proficiency using and extending ML frameworks and libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn)
  • Experience using version control (i.e. Git)
  • Experience working with Electronic Health Record (EHR), claims, or clinical trials datasets
  • Demonstrated background in conducting both exploratory data analysis and modeling
  • Publications or conference presentations on topics in the machine learning field
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and keep on top of industry trends. Eagerness to teach colleagues about new techniques
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to self-direct
  • Experience collaborating with other data scientists to develop machine learning models
