Discovery Attribute Sciences within Amgen Research provides scientific and technical expertise to support early discovery research through to later stage molecule optimization and late-stage selection of Amgen's pipeline of drug candidates. To underpin our commitment to serve patients, Amgen is expanding our Research and Development facility in Thousand Oaks, CA (ATO). This Scientist position is an exciting opportunity to unlock the potential of biology for patients suffering from serious illnesses by discovering, developing, manufacturing and delivering innovative human therapeutics.

Position Responsibilities
Identify and characterize the attributes of therapeutic protein candidates

Assess a variety of manufacturability and quality attributes of these therapeutic proteins, including biophysical properties such as viscosity and aggregation, as well as chemical modifications such as glycosylation, oxidation, deamidation, aspartate isomerization

Develop and apply novel sample preparation and analytical methods for analysis of therapeutic proteins and synthetic molecules with emphasis on reversed-phase and size exclusion chromatography, mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), capillary electrophoresis (and CE-MS) and other biophysical techniques such as calorimetry and protein viscosity measurements

Communicate (verbal and written) scientific concepts and results

Work collaboratively with other scientists on multidisciplinary teams

Work independently in advancing projects and studies within required deadlines

Actively create or contribute to patent and publications

Keep current with field of expertise, participate and advance drug development, technologies and information services programs within Amgen

Demonstrate external scientific eminence in the form of peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations

Follow protocols and procedures, maintain accurate records in an electronic lab notebook, and generate quality data for use in drug development and regulatory filings

Basic Qualifications
Doctorate Degree
OR
Master's degree and 4 years of scientific experience
OR
Bachelor's degree and 6 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate or Masters degree with 3+ years in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or equivalent with emphasis in mass spectrometry and other analytical characterization techniques, such as reversed-phase, size exclusion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and calorimetry

Relevant industry experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a biopharmaceutical setting

Experience with small molecule MS and MS/MS accurate mass measurements, empirical formulae derivation and structural characterizations

Documented theoretical knowledge and hand-on experience in peptide mapping of proteins, intact and reduced LC-MS analysis for identification and quantitation of chemical modifications, native mass spectrometry, ion mobility and experience with different fragmentation techniques such as ETD, ECD and HCD

Training and experience operating Thermo Orbitrap, Agilent and Waters Q-ToF mass spectrometers, Waters and Agilent UPLCs, calorimetry, protein viscosity and formulation screening measurements

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specific knowledge of statistical processing of data, including related software like Excel, Spotfire, JMP or ArrayStudio, as well as mass spectrometric and chromatographic software control and data processing packages
