Job Description

We Are:

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) seeks highly motivated candidates to join the Fermilab Quantum Institute (FQI) team to help expand and innovate activities within FQI's research portfolio. The selected candidate will contribute to the success of ongoing projects in quantum machine learning and optimization. These projects leverage partnerships at other national laboratories, universities, and leading corporate institutions with strong presences in QIS. In addition to quantum algorithm work, the successful candidate will have the opportunity for involvement in Fermilab's quantum sensors, quantum networking or other quantum technology for high energy physics efforts if interested.

Every effort will be made to design the research program and maintain support for a Fermilab Research Associate such that they will have the opportunity to publish results and build a portfolio of work aimed at securing future employment.

The appointment is for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension based on successful proposals for additional funding.

You Will
  • Study and apply quantum algorithms to problems in High Energy Physics (HEP), especially for data analysis, machine learning, and optimization
  • Study and characterize and performance of modern quantum computing hardware
  • Present work at conferences
  • Educate and train scientists in QIS

We Are Looking For
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, or a relevant discipline by the time of the appointment
  • A clear record of scientific accomplishments and publications
  • Demonstrated computational skills
  • Demonstrated QIS skills and comfort with quantum algorithms
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use creative problem-solving skills independently and in collaboration with others
  • Ability to travel by automobile and/or commercial aircraft both domestically and internationally

We respect, understand and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity, and abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations. Successful candidates will join a team with deeply held commitments to these principles and will be expected to share in these commitments.
