Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Research Assistant position. The Research Assistant is a part-time, casual position with no benefits. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Summer Research Technicians in the Hewitt laboratory will assist in ongoing field research funded by an NSF Office of Polar Programs grant. The overarching goal of our project is to yield broad-scale mechanistic insights into controls on tree growth and changes in tree abundance in a changing climate. Specific research activities include measuring trees, photographing cone production, installing data loggers to monitor edaphic factors, installing nutrient resin strips, harvesting cones, collecting branches for growth and foliar nutrient analysis, setting up monitoring plots documenting seedling demography, and harvesting seedling root systems for molecular analysis of root-associated microbes. The Research Technician is expected to contribute to all aspects of the field research activities, including refinement of field protocols and data collection, processing of field samples, communicating with multiple field teams, and planning logistical operations for accomplishing the field research goals in remote locations. The technician will work directly with collaborators in the field on a day-to-day basis. Hewitt will provide remote supervision and, if travel is possible, supervision in the field for a limited time period.
