Ranger Naturalist IIs (Rangers) perform general maintenance, improvements, and other duties related to the operation, development, preservation, conservation, and management of East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) watershed, fisheries, wildlife, and developed outdoor recreation areas. They work in watersheds and recreation areas located either in the Sierra Foothills’ Mokelumne basin area or the East Bay area. Responsibilities of this position do NOT include law enforcement duties.

Rangers assigned to the watershed use hand and power tools to construct barbed wire fences, gates, and spring boxes, and build and maintain hiking trails and fire roads. They work alongside heavy equipment operators to construct and maintain stock ponds and culverts, and install erosion control structures. They use a variety of integrated pest management methods to control vegetation including: pesticide application, manual control, mechanical control, and prescribed fire and grazing.

Rangers assigned to a recreation area routinely work weekends and holidays and have considerable public contact with visitors, answering questions and providing information about natural resources and available facilities. They use hand tools, power tools, and equipment to construct, install, repair, and maintain fences, tables, benches, signs, day use/camping areas, docks, and associated facilities or structures. They plant native and indigenous plants, develop landscaped areas, as well as remove hazardous trees and brush. They rent out boats, issue permits, make retail sales, and handle accounting and bookkeeping.

Rangers in either watershed or recreation areas participate in wildland fire prevention and suppression, operate vehicles and equipment including rubber-wheeled tractors, skid steers, and various types of power boats, present naturalist programs to the public, collect fishery and wildlife data, direct temporary and part-time workers, and train new staff in recreation and watershed management practices.

The salary range for Ranger Naturalist II is $6,703 per month increasing to $7,038, $7,390, $7,760, and $8,148 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.
