We are:

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is seeking a motivated and experienced Quality Control (QC) Engineer to support the Laboratory's Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II). PIP-II is a major Department of Energy (DOE) Project in collaboration with other institutions with a goal to provide powerful, high-intensity proton beams to the Laboratory's experiments. The increased beam power will position Fermilab as the leading laboratory in the world for accelerator-based neutrino experiments. The QC Engineer will be a member of the PIP-II Quality Assurance (QA) team, reporting to the PIP-II Quality Assurance Manager. This QC Engineer role will have the exciting opportunity to attain a deep understanding of the Project's Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) technology and Cryogenic Systems. The QC Engineer will be responsible for directly supporting the PIP-II SRF & Cryo Systems team with ensuring effective and consistent implementation of the PIP-II Quality Assurance Plan in according with the Fermilab Quality Assurance Program. In this position, the QC Engineer will support the implementation of QC processes and procedures; identify opportunities to improve existing procedures, conduct audits, and closely collaborate with team members to build new quality requirements, controls, tests, inspections, and verifications.

You Will:
  • Support the PIP-II SRF and Cryo Systems Team with the development and implementation of their Quality Control requirements and Quality Control Plans in alignment with the PIP-II QA Plan, Systems Engineering Management Plan, and other Project Management and Technical procedures.
  • Supports the PIP-II SRF and Cryo Systems Team with devising appropriate standards and methods for inspection, testing, and evaluation.
  • Standardize QC methodology within the PIP-II SRF and Cryo System.
  • Conducts assessments on the implementation of the PIP-II QA Plan, System-specific QC Plan, and related procedures; provide results, and suggestions for improvement.
  • Oversee implementation of travelers and conducts in-process audits.
  • Closely collaborate with the PIP-II Quality Engineer on the development of new processes and procedures where necessary.
  • Logs and Reports issues and nonconformances to Project QA Manager and Technical Integration Team.
  • Actively participates in the issues management process by identifying root causes, developing corrective actions plans, and performing effectiveness reviews.
  • Provides input into the continuous improvement of Project processes via the integration of lessons learned.
  • Assists in the development of in-process documentation, including travelers, manufacturing inspection plans, and checklists, including verifying effective implementation.
  • Ensures consistent implementation of PIP-II document control and change management procedures.
  • Effectively communicates with all levels in the Project to resolve issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Proactively assess processes to verify implementation, identify deficiencies, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assures implementation of approved changes into training, processes, and procedures.
  • Develops new solutions in collaboration with the SRF & Cryo Systems Team, the PIP-II Quality Team, and the PIP-II Technical Integration Team.
  • Assures work planning and control measures are incorporated into in-process procedures; and assess their effectiveness.
  • Lead activities in identifying and resolving issues related to equipment, tooling, engineering controls, processes, and designs.
  • Manages aggregation of nonconformances and actively works to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Follows all Fermilab policies and manual procedures.
  • Travels domestically and internationally to assess implementation of the Project Quality requirements and/or evaluate Partner/Vendor programs.

We Are Looking For:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field or Master's Degree in an applicable Engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering or manufacturing experience.
  • Engineering experience in a Research & Development environment a plus.
  • Experiences with Lean and Six Sigma principles, FMEA, Risk Management, and Auditing.
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team member or as an independent contributor.
  • Ability to solve complex problems by applying the most effective quality assurance or continuous improvement practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
