Job Summary
This City of Salem Public Works Department is hiring a Maintenance Operator II in the Signs and Sweeping division! This is skilled maintenance and equipment operation work primarily involved in street sweeping operations in the Public Works Signs & Sweeping section. The work involves operation of a street sweeper on assigned routes in the City; performing skilled operation of street sweeper, cleaning streets on a designated route or as needed for construction or spill clean ups from motor vehicle incidents where traffic obstructions are a hazard; operating 5 and 10 yard dump trucks with various mechanical attachments such as snow plows, sand spreaders, deicing applications; and other various equipment such as front end loaders, backhoes, or street flushers; preparing daily reports; cleaning and maintaining equipment daily and other related work as assigned.

Considerable experience utilizing regenerative air street sweeping machines including experience in the operation of a variety of construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides knowledge of the appropriate materials, procedures, tools, equipment operation related to street cleaning work; knowledge of the geography and physical layout of the City of Salem; traffic laws of the State of Oregon; occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in equipment operation, street sweeping and traffic control. Candidates must possess skill in the operation of moderately complex construction and transportation equipment; ability to service various types of equipment; the ability to work with little or no direct supervision while maintaining high productivity. Candidate must possess a valid Oregon Class "A" Commercial drivers license.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, drug test (including marijuana), and physical abilities exam.
  • Must have an Oregon Class A Commercial Driver license (CDL) and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Two years general maintenance, repair, paving, or construction experience in street right-of- way, street maintenance, public works facilities, utility systems, and public improvements. Preference will be given to experience in specific area of assignment - Signs and Sweeping.
  • Any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Preference points will be given to those with experience in traffic control, responding to snow and ice duties, and working with equipment such as backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, etc.
