The Cellular Sciences Department at Amgen, Thousand Oaks is seeking a highly motivated and experienced scientist with a strong viral vector biology background to join our organization. They will be responsible for strategizing and designing approaches to develop tools to purify viral vectors (eg. lentivirus vector) that will support the development and clinical implementation of innovative cell therapies. The Principal Scientist will lead the upstream and downstream process development for viral vectors as well as optimization and qualification of the final process that will lead to high yield, high quality and relevant purity viral vector preparations. The Principal Scientist will design and execute process development studies to develop a thorough understanding of operating and performance parameters. The Principal Scientist will be able to perform experiments independently, organize and analyze results and present in team and management meetings. In addition, they will work in conjunction with appropriate teams to define scientific strategy and to support program /project needs. They need to be able to provide matrix leadership and support people development.

Responsibilities
  • Design, execute and lead process development experiments for lentiviral vectors including rational process design/development and characterization studies relevant to the stage of development
  • Utilize expertise in viral vector process development to lead evaluation and characterization of novel manufacturing technologies and drive innovation and IP
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with cross functional team members.
  • Create and environment of scientific excellence and advancement, including knowledge of current landscape, external engagement and industry direction


Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 2 years of virology, molecular biology or protein biochemistry experience
OR
Master's degree and 6 years of virology, molecular biology or protein biochemistry experience
OR
Bachelor's degree and 8 years of virology, molecular biology or protein biochemistry experience

OR
Associate's degree and 10 years of virology, molecular biology or protein biochemistry experience
OR
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of virology, molecular biology or protein biochemistry experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • A strong background in leading technology and new platform development for production and purification of viruses, vaccines or viral vectors
  • Expertise in downstream viral process including ultracentrifugation, TFF, formulation and finish/fill is preferred
  • Experience with use and characterization of viral vectors (lenti- or retro-virus vectors or adeno-associated virus)
  • Demonstration of technical proficiency, scientific innovation, independent thinking, interaction with and training team members, and cross-functional collaboration
