Downstream Process Development at Amyris is rapidly increasing in scope as we continue to diversify our portfolio of industrial bioproducts. We are looking for an experienced, creative and ambitious engineering leader who will help us implement the separations equipment, automation and software tools necessary to scale and transfer our products to manufacturing, monitor and respond to process performance at scale, and drive continuous process improvement. The Principal Engineer will be working in a cross-functional capacity, to make recommendations, build consensus and support implementation of new equipment and processes at pilot and manufacturing scale. This is a principally a supervisory role. In addition to being a subject matter expert in downstream separations processes, the successful candidate will be expected to mentor and develop early career process engineers who are focusing on validating new separations trains at pilot scale.

The Principal Engineer will join our Process Development and Engineering team and be part of our Downstream Process Development subgroup. The Process Development group has responsibility for early and late stage process development, techno economic analysis, laboratory and pilot plant testing, and technology transfer to Amyris-owned sites and contract manufacturing facilities across the world.

Downstream Process Development in particular focuses on the isolation and purification of target molecules from fermentation broth. We work closely with the Pilot Plant, Engineering, Quality, EHS, Manufacturing and Analytical Chemistry teams at Amyris, to develop, scale and commercialize new downstream processes. Our fermentation-derived bioproducts include oils, water-soluble and insoluble molecules that span the Amyris portfolio in Clean Beauty, Health and Wellness and Flavors & Fragrances. This year, we introduced 5 new pilot operations, of which 3 will be deployed in manufacturing by Q1 2020. We expect to sustain this rate of growth as we continue to introduce 2-4 new molecules to market each year for the foreseeable future. As such, we seek an individual whose aspirations are consistent with those of Amyris: high-growth and fast-moving. Ensuring that our projects are executed safely by our employees and our contractors will always be a top priority for the person in this position.

Responsibilities:
    • Demonstrate safety leadership. Be responsible for individual and co-worker safety; strictly adhere to and support all safety procedures and policies, and put safety first during all stages of design, piloting and tech transfer
    • Work with the pilot plant, Quality and EHS teams to ensure that expansion of piloting facilities to regulated, flammable and other classified products meets PD needs for process validation and optimization, while also meeting compliance requirements
    • Work with the pilot plant, engineering, automation and software teams to upgrade efficiency, process control, monitoring and sampling on existing downstream unit operations, in the pilot plant, and at our manufacturing facilities
    • Guide selection, instrumentation and commissioning for new downstream unit operations, including batch, continuous and multistage operations. Review SOPs and training protocols. Lead PHAs and PSSAs.
    • Supervise early/mid-career process engineers on the Downstream Process Development team
    • Review PFDs, P&IDs and Technology Transfer documentation. Oversee the preparation of equipment sizing, utility and waste estimates.
    • Drive adoption of statistical tools in the analysis and troubleshooting of downstream process performance
    • Develop strong working relationships and work collaboratively across all areas of Amyris, and with our manufacturing and engineering partners
    • Embrace Amyris Core Values

    • Experience developing PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances and sizing estimates for separations processes with 3 or more unit operations in sequence.
    • Experience working with vendors and project management tools to implement capital projects >$100K.
    • Experience with process modeling software, statistical data analysis tools, and SCADA software
