Position Summary

An NIH Funded position for studies on the mitochondrial ATP synthase and on Batten disease, a childhood neurodegenerative disease. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in many facets of protein expression, purification, and crystallization, nanodiscs preparation, yeast fermentation, and more. Experience in biochemistry and molecular biology is essential. The candidate must be willing to learn new skills, interact with others, keep a detailed notebook, and eventually, to work independently. We are goal oriented reasonable goals are set for each day and week and thus the hours in each workday or week can vary.

The position will be titled Research Assistant, Research Associate, or Postdoctoral Fellow depending on the education and experience of the selected candidate. The salary is commensurate with experience. Candidates identified as a Postdoctoral Research Associates/Fellows will be paid according to NIH/NRSA standards for postdoc compensation. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Construct gene constructs using standard Molecular Biology methods.
  • DNA sequence analysis and interpretation.
  • PCR, subcloning, and DNA plasmid preparation.
  • Construction of deletion mutations in yeast genome.
  • Growth of yeast in a 60l fermenter.
  • Protein purification and assay.
  • Preparation of nanodiscs for cryo-EM
  • Set crystal screens and test crystals for X-ray diffraction.
  • Aid in x-ray data collection.
  • Learn additional skills as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Additional Responsibilities for candidate at the PhD/Postdoctoral Level
  • Assist in writing manuscripts
  • Read current literature
  • Give Journal club papers
  • Train new members as needed.



Minimum Required Education & Experience
  • B.S. in Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field
  • A PhD received within the last 6 years is required to be considered for a Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow
  • Must achieve satisfactory results from a background check



Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Fluent in English.
  • Excellent reading, writing and communication skills.
  • Technical requirements include skills in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
  • Ability to work well within a group setting.
  • Highly independent and self-motivated.
  • Familiar with standard Windows Office software, spreadsheet applications, and graphics applications.
  • Ability to work and interact well with others of diverse backgrounds.
  • Extreme attention to detail with good notebook keeping.
  • Flexibility in working hours (long days and weekends if needed).
  • Ability to collect and analyze data.



Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities at the PhD/Postdoctoral Level
  • Must demonstrate strong leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to set priorities and excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to collect and analyze complex data.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Skills in X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM.
