The Crime and Justice Institute (CJI), a division of Community Resources for Justice (CRJ), is a non-profit organization working at the local, state, and national level to improve public safety and the delivery of justice. CJI provides technical assistance, research and other services to improve outcomes in the corrections system, policing, pre-trial, re-entry, community supervision, juvenile justice, and more. Responsibilities

This Policy Specialist position will oversee and manage complex projects and the oversight of project teams. Policy Specialists are specialized experts who provide direct technical assistance to client and funders, as well as providing mentoring, coaching and leadership to project teams.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of complex criminal justice reform projects with local, state, tribal and/or federal agencies.
  • Produce high-quality and clear written materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Work with data staff in the coordination of data collection, coding, entry, and analysis for research / evaluation projects.
  • Produce complex evaluation reports including data analysis, graphics and narratives.
  • Write journal articles and policy reports.
  • Conduct evaluation of legislation, policies, and practices related to key decision points within the criminal justice system, including but not limited to sentencing, prison and jail release, reentry, and community corrections.
  • Manage projects, including client relationships, timelines, work plans, billing, budgets, and project reporting requirements.
  • Explain complex concepts and legislation to a general audience, including stakeholders and CJI teammates, in conversation and in writing.
  • Develop and deliver presentations to varied audiences, including criminal justice stakeholders, corrections staff, and policy makers.
  • Help create and maintain a culture in which staff are committed to implementing evidence- based practices and policies in the field of corrections or related disciplines to improve public safety outcomes.
  • In close partnership with director and deputy directors, participate in business development activities including leading the development of relationships with potential new funders, maintaining existing relationships with current funders, generating new ideas and developing proposal concepts, leading and/or assisting in grant writing and proposal preparation.
