A Plant Inspector performs inspections of steel pipe, fittings, pumps, valves and related components, assemblies, and materials primarily at manufacturers’ facilities and less frequently in the field to ensure quality and compliance with plans and specifications. This position requires inspection expertise in a variety of areas including welding, coatings, linings, concrete, nondestructive testing, and related areas of fabrication and installation.


Typical responsibilities may include:

  • reading and reviewing contract plans, specifications, and design drawings;

  • inspecting assemblies and materials to ensure compliance of manufacturing methods, components, materials, and workmanship with plans and specifications, codes, and standards;

  • performing inspections in a variety of specialized areas including steel pipe, fittings, pumps, valves, tanks, structural steel, welding, industrial coatings and linings, and structural concrete;

  • traveling domestically and internationally to make inspections at manufacturers’ plants and facilities;

  • conferring with manufacturers’ representatives regarding compliance with plans and specifications;

  • testing of concrete and batch plant inspection, including batch plant processing, aggregate sampling, air, tare weight, cylinder, and slump testing; and preparing and maintaining accurate computerized testing and inspection reports. 

The ideal candidate will possess relevant certification and/or training and experience in the inspection of welding, coatings, radiographic film interpretation, and familiarity with ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle and concrete testing from organizations including American Welding Society, American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), and National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Ideally, suited candidates will have applied this experience as a visitor to manufacturing, fabricating, and testing facilities as a third party representative or representative of the project’s owner. 

The salary range is $8,582 per month increasing to $9,011, $9,462, $9,935 and $10,432 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledge and abilities indicated above. Typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge and abilities is a combination of training and experience equivalent to:   

  1. Completion of the twelfth grade or its equivalent; AND

  2. Four years of experience in the testing or inspection of materials commonly used in water works projects; or quality control inspection in the metal trades or closely related industry.  

Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally. Possession of or ability to obtain a passport/visa is required. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of conditions including confined spaces. Must be willing to work unusual hours and to work overtime as required.
