Position Purpose

The Patient Navigator will play a key role in a research project examining the effectiveness of various medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among currently incarcerated adults. More specifically, the Patient Navigator will be responsible for maintaining weekly contact with study participants and assisting with establishing linkages to community-based medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and behavioral healthcare resources when participants reintegrate into communities.

The project is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), though the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN) initiative. By partnering with local and state justice systems, the JCOIN initiative studies seek to increase high-quality care for justice-involved individuals with opioid use disorders (OUD). In this collaboration with New York University, the New Hampshire (NH) Department of Corrections (DOC), and Dartmouth College, this project specifically seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly FDA-approved extended-release buprenorphine formulation versus extended-release naltrexone among currently incarcerated adult volunteers with OUD. The Patient Navigator will be part of the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health (CTBH) at Dartmouth College, and will work under the direct supervision of the Project Director and under the overall supervision of the Center Director, Dr. Lisa Marsch.

The Patient Navigator will be responsible for maintaining weekly contact with participants in the community, and scheduling follow-up research visits with participants. They will also facilitate linkages between participants and local resources, including MOUD/behavioral healthcare. The Patient Navigator will work primarily in the community and jails in the Concord, NH region. Limited time will be spent in an office setting. This position requires travel between study sites and the Dartmouth College offices in Lebanon, NH.

Research Responsibilities (50%)
Participant Tracking: Maintains weekly contact with participants in the community and continuously updates participant contact information. Updates study tracking logs in an accurate and timely manner.
Reporting and Communication: Provide updates on follow-up contact rates, safety events, and study supplies to the Project Director.
Study Management: Communicates with the Project Director, Research Coordinator, and Research Assistant regarding study operations and achievement of study goals.
Documentation: Maintains study files in accordance with federal regulations. Assures that participant and data confidentiality and integrity are maintained.
Assures that Federal guidelines and requirements are met, and all work is completed in accordance with human subject research Good Clinical Practice.
Site Relationship: Establishes and maintains positive relationships with site staff and participants. Demonstrates effective and professional communication.
Problem Resolution: Identifies, responds to, and participates in the resolution of potential and actual problems in study operations and participant activities.
Protocol Compliance: Ensures that study activities are carried out in accordance with protocols, including, but not limited to, participant research visits.

Social Service (30%)
Linkages to MOUD : Supports individuals in establishing linkage to ongoing MOUD /behavioral healthcare in the community. Assists with appropriate referrals to community and social service resources.
Community Relationships: Establishes and maintains positive relationships with participants, community MOUD /behavioral healthcare providers and other social service agencies.

Communication/Presentation (15%)
Effectively communicates study protocol and research goals to CTBH and DOC affiliates, study sites, and other community partners.
Demonstrates a commitment to foster inclusiveness and diversity though interactions and communications with others.
Contributes to and works well with the CTBH team.
Properly represents CTBH and Dartmouth College in all aspects of employment and associated duties.

Miscellaneous (5%)
Participates in on-going trainings and keep abreast of developments in the field.
Performs other duties as assigned.
