Job Summary
Do you enjoy sports or working outside? Are you looking for temporary employment? If so, the City of Salem has opportunities for highly motivated individuals to join our Parks and Recreation team!

We are currently hiring Recreation Leaders (Levels I-III) to support the City's Sports and Neighborhood Recreation programming. Work times will vary and may require staff to work on holidays, depending on the area of assignment. This recruitment is for temporary positions limited to 6 months per calendar year, however most of the work hours will be during June-November 2021.

As a Recreation Leader for RS Neighborhood Recreation and Sports Programs, the work involves assisting recreation staff with day to day implementation of programs, as well as program operation and evaluation. Recreation Leaders work with youth, ages 3-17, leading and conducting activities such as soccer, basketball, tennis, pickleball, and/or flag football, leading and arranging games, arts and crafts, motivating participants and volunteers, communicating and enforcing program policies and procedures. The position requires attendance at staff meetings and trainings.

Successful candidates should be organized, work well with others, follow oral and written direction, and enjoy being part of a team. Assignment to the various recreational programs will be based on the candidate's skills and level of experience.

Recreation Program Aide Salary: $12.00/hour
Recreation Assistant Salary: $12.48/hour
Recreation Lead Salary: $13.48/hour

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass a pre-employment background and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must be 16 years of age or older at time of hire.
  • Depending on area of assignment, a Oregon Driver license and driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards may be required. Candidates must have reliable transportation.
  • Recreation Program Aide: One year or season of experience in recreation, education, sports, or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and training working with youth and/or adults in a recreational setting.
  • Recreation Assistant: One year or more of customer service or related seasonal experience demonstrating program support or coordination in recreation, education, sports, or extracurricular activities using specialized skills, experience and training while working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.
  • Recreation Lead: Two years of or more of customer service or related experience demonstrating leadership roles in recreation, education, sports, or extracurricular activities using advanced or technical skills, experience and training while working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.

Preferred Skills/Experience
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Experience working with youth
  • Experience in various sports desired
  • Volunteer recruitment or coordination of recreation programs
  • Bilingual proficiency
