Fermilab's Facilities Engineering Services Section builds and maintains mission-critical infrastructure and services from which high-energy physics research can be safely accomplished without interruption. We provide housing accommodations and logistics and property management. We work on projects that support all of the laboratory's facilities and experiments.

The Fermilab Facilities Engineering Services Section (FESS) seeks a highly motivated Mechanical Staff Engineer candidate to join the Engineering Department. Under general direction, the selected candidate will perform engineering tasks, which includes research, design, and development of small to medium engineering projects or portions of large projects in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations, requirements and standards and all DOE orders.

You Will:
  • Under the direction of a more senior engineer, scientist, consultant, general contractor, or architect plan and perform research, design and development of small/medium engineering projects and/or portions of large projects.
  • Develop drawings and specifications for various engineering projects. Plan projects from inception to completion and bring project(s) to operating status.
  • Interface with consultant for building/ system/ project requirements.
  • Receive general direction on smaller/routine projects and more specific instructions for more complex tasks. Some latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
  • Research/propose solutions to engineering problems.
  • Manage smaller design projects from concept, design to installation and commissioning.
  • Independently evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to assignments which have clear and specified objectives.
  • Review A/E designs as well as shop drawings.
  • Serve on safety panels or review committees to audit the documentation provided for other project installations along with the associated engineering analysis, as required.
  • Provide technical direction and/or supervise draftspersons, designers, engineering associates or technicians as assigned to specific projects, or supervise junior engineer's dependent on assignment.

We Are Looking For:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 3+ years of related experience required.
  • The successful candidate will have experience in one or more of the following related areas:
    • Design of HVAC Systems
    • Design of piping Systems
    • Design of plumbing systems and code experience
    • HVAC “Controls/DDC background desired
    • Experience with energy modeling/HVAC softwares, especially CDS-Trace desired
    • Exposure to Building Commissioning
    • Familiarity with ASHRAE and ASME code requirements and application for piping is desired
    • Working knowledge of building codes related to mechanical systems
  • Proficient with AutoCAD required, and/or Revit is a plus.
  • Experience in Fire Protection Engineering is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer licensureor ability to obtain licensure in the State of Illinois is desired.
