Manager, Strategic Initiative Projects (District-Wide)

FUNCTION: Provide oversight and manage all aspects of various Strategic Initiative projects. Engage external and internal stakeholders in development of initiatives from conceptualization to fruition. Collaborate with leaders, staff, and students to develop opportunities, activities, and events that advance the College's impact to the community and accomplish annual priorities in alignment with the strategic plan.


Essential Job Functions:
  • Provides overall management of the San Jac Cares calling program
    • Works with steering team to maintain the SJ Cares Tool Kit and ensure that it is continually updated
    • Coordinates volunteers, part-time employees and student assistants who serve as callers
    • Solicits and supports participation from many different campus work groups for research efforts and student support
    • Prepares reports on San Jac Cares - results from qualitative data as well as numerical calling data.
    • Identifies barriers for students and collaborates with other units of the college to develop solutions
    • Develops scripts for callers
    • Tracks data from callers
    • Troubleshoots student issues, working with departments across college to resolve issues that surface
  • Manages college participation in efforts that emanate from the Strategic Initiatives office, including industry sponsored community projects such as MindTrekkers
    • Reconsider ways to provide programming for events like MindTrekkers in a socially distanced world. Manages equipment for experiments.
    • Manages logistics of major community events.
    • Interfaces with industry and community partners
    • Communicates with ISD leadership and staff
    • Solicits and supports participation from many different campus work groups to coordinate participants in support of college outreach activities to large populations of middle and high school students.
  • Partners with industry and workforce organizations such as East Harris County Manufacturers Association (EHCMA) and the Economic Alliance to deliver speeches and to host activities to recruit high school students and parents into the regional workforce.
  • Supports efforts with community groups that enhance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity initiatives across the community and in the College
  • Represents the college at a variety of community and workforce events, leads workshops, gives speeches, and interacts with community groups.
  • Directs a variety of innovative start-up projects that are strategic for the college and which, if successful, will be scaled up and handed off to other units.
  • Manages the budget and activities of the various industry supported efforts
  • Works with college researchers to track student participation and retention in special projects.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to design frameworks, timelines and plans to execute projects accordingly
  • Ability to coordinate complex projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to prepare presentations and speak effectively in various public forums
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaboration oriented and diverse workplace
  • Skill and ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; respond to sensitive matters and/or situations with discretion, tact and confidentiality
  • Knowledge of event planning principles
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education, public administration, workforce education, or a project-related field

Preferred Education:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.

Required Experience:
  • 5 years of progressive experience in education (higher ed or K-12), public administration, or business administration / association / trade group.

Preferred Experience:
  • 2 years' experience in project management including budget/fiscal management

Note: The duties of this position require a physical presence at the assigned on-site work location during unrestricted operations with very limited or no opportunity for remote work arrangements.

Salary Grade: 27
