For more than 79 years, the USOa private, nonprofit organizationhas served the men and women of the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform from the moment they join, through their deployments and as they transition back to their communities.

Today's USO continuously adapts to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families, so they can focus on their very important mission. We operate USO centers at or near military installations across the United States and throughout the world, including in combat zones, and even un-staffed USO service sites in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy.

The Manager, Social Media & Public Relations is responsible for leading multiple facets of the USO's integrated communications strategy to build awareness of the organization, increase engagement and loyalty with supporters, improve utilization by service members and their families, grow audiences and generate donations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • Develop and lead the USO's social media strategy to promote the USO brand, grow new audiences and drive engagement across digital and traditional media platforms.*
  • In coordination with designated USO Marketing and Communications leadership and staff, monitor a team of digital/social contributors and producers to develop, monitor and manage organic and sponsored content as needed.*
  • Working with Marketing and Communications colleagues, identify, develop and execute public relations plans to enhance the USO brand and contribute to digital content.*
  • Contribute to the development and execution of a Digital First strategy. Deploy tactics to maximize traffic to USO digital properties of varying size and scope. Utilize the reach of partners, supporters and other influencer channels to tell the USO story and meet business goals.*
  • cross-departmental teams in the development and execution of new and existing digital and traditional media solutions that build and sustain diverse USO audiences and support strategies that increase donor/constituent acquisition. Test, enhance and optimize the digital user experience to meet established targets.*
  • Contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of USO's crisis communications plan on social and traditional channels.*
  • Optimize SEO by aligning it with the overall digital and traditional communications plans, understand leading social media management tools and have knowledge of design to create visually appealing graphics to coordinate with appropriate content. *
  • Serve as Team/Project Lead for digital and traditional media projects as directed including but not limited to audience and market research efforts, digital analytics monitoring and dashboard updates.*
  • Lead, manage and mentor Social Media/PR Specialist. Perform assigned duties in the absence of Director, Public Relations & Social Media.*
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications or a related field.
  • 5+ years of work experience in a web marketing or communications role, including 1+ years in a supervisory capacity. Relevant experience in a non-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred.
  • Strong understanding of public relations strategies and tactics along with an interest in current events, news, and trends.
  • In-depth knowledge of web publishing technologies, digital marketing tools, online media applications, user experience best practices, website analytics platforms and social media channels and interest communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams. Ability to achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment. Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Working knowledge of basic business and accounting functions e.g., project management and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications and programs, including Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency with Ektron preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, valid driver's license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO's mission.

  • This position is located in Arlington, VA. Preference will be given to local candidates within commuting distance to the location. Relocation assistance or remote working arrangements may be considered for highly qualified candidates.
