PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

Human Rights First seeks a dynamic, ambitious and well-organized Major Gifts Officer to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward individual donors at the $5,000+ levels.  In addition to meeting with and soliciting major donors, this position manages the Board of Advocates for maximum fundraising and engagement potential. This position works collaboratively with the organizations President & CEO and program staff to coordinate donor interactions. This position will help grow a base of major gift donors and serve as an integral member of the development team, contributing ideas, strategy, insights, contacts and operational support to advance the overall fundraising goals of the team and Human Rights First.


 


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Work in concert with Sr. Director of Development to develop a cohesive fundraising plan for small-dollar donors, annual fund, and major donors.

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 120 major gift donors and prospects, cultivating and stewarding gifts at the $5K+ levels.

  • Regularly spend time meeting with donors and prospects one-on-one primarily in the New York metro area (expectation of at least 3-5 face-to-face or pre-scheduled, substantive phone meetings per month).

  • Assess and expand the major gift prospect pool by building relationships, identifying new potential candidates and acting on data and prospect research.

  • Develop and execute an engagement strategy for the Board of Advocates to achieve maximum potential.

  • Conceive of and execute (in coordination with the development and communications teams) a calendar of cultivation and stewardship events that engage donors and prospects in the organizations mission and program in strategically viable markets around the country; this will allow opportunities for national travel as appropriate.

  • Manage outreach and engagement for the annual Awards Dinner Host Committee.

  • Support the Senior Director of Development in managing development-related Board communications, solicitations, and stewardship events and trips.

  • Monitor closely and meet monthly and quarterly fundraising goals.

  • Utilize and update the Raisers Edge donor database by recording activities, contacts, and strategies on an on-going basis consistent with department requirements.

  • Other duties as requested based on department and/or organizational need



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE:



  • A Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required, and minimum of 5 years related development experience with at least 3 years front-line major gifts fundraising

  • High-level of ambition and energy to be constantly meeting, qualifying and engaging donors and prospects.

  • Polish and professionalism to interact with donors, senior management and other external contacts (Board Members and Board of Advocates members) on the phone, in person, and in various forms of correspondence

  • Impeccable follow-up and follow-through skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Ability to self-regulate, schedule, and meet deadlines for major donor moves with minimal oversight

  • Confidentiality and discretion

  • Commitment to Human Rights Firsts mission and demonstrated interest in human rights and/or social justice

  • Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies

  • Experience with digital fundraising initiatives and/or fundraising membership programs a plus.

  • Ability to work occasional evening or weekend and ability to travel up to 25% of the time

  • Preferred: Proficiency in Raiser's Edge
