The Litigation Practice Group Manager (the LPGM) is a full time, exempt position that is responsible for managing the business and administration of a practice group to drive strategic and profitable growth for the Firm. This position will manage the business and administration to ensure the well-coordinated operational support for the practice group. The LPGM will engage in analysis and practices and deploy applicable tools to evaluate and increase the revenue, control expenses, improve profitability and improve efficiencies of the practice group. This LPGM is also responsible for supporting the Practice Group Leader in implementing Firm-wide strategic initiatives at the practice group level. The LPGM is responsible for supporting practice group members across offices and to improve connections and relations across practice groups. This position must maintain professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and Firm matters while exercising sound judgment at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities:


The scope of responsibility encompasses a wide range of duties, including, but not limited to:




  • Establish and maintain clear and consistent lines of communication with the Practice Group Leader, Managing Partner and Chief Operating Officer.

  • Establish and maintain clear and consistent lines of communication with practice group members across offices regarding all aspects of the practice group and the Firm.

  • Regularly visit with practice group members including those located in other offices to ensure clear communication and coordination. Ensure that all attorneys in the practice group are integrated across geographic locations.

  • Prepare for and conduct regular practice group meetings and other types of practice group gatherings and communications.


Strategic and Business Planning


  • Support implementation efforts through monitoring and reporting on progress of Firm-wide strategic projects and implementations in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.

  • Develop and define appropriate strategies to manage and support the profitable growth of the practice group and Firm. Evaluate and implement improvements to the practice groups structure. Develop improvements to be more efficient by leveraging resources across offices, departments, and practices.

  • Work with Marketing, Accounting and other internal Firm resources to coordinate research and other aspects of preparing a business plan for the practice group as well as for individual attorneys.

  • Evaluate and keep track of all practice group and individual attorney business plans. Supervise and monitor implementation of the practice group business plan.  Interface and coordinate with Marketing on other business development and public relations matters. 


Attorney Staffing, Development and Workload Management


  • Gather and analyze economic data of the practice group and assess performance on an ongoing basis in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.

  • Monitor attorney workload and utilization reports in order to identify productivity issues and counsel attorneys where appropriate.

  • Act as liaison with Accounting to generate and analyze financial reports and prepare appropriate summaries and briefings.

  • Participate in recruiting, both new attorneys and laterals, and advise the Practice Group Leader and Managing Partner on hiring recommendations and future timekeeper needs. Ensure the integration and smooth transition of laterals into the practice group.

  • Work with the Professional Development team on attorney trainings and development needs.

  • Support the Practice Group Leader in providing input and recommendations to the Executive Committee regarding attorney promotions and partner compensation. Coordinate and participate in Partnership Promotion Meetings with associates consistent with firm policies.  Assist the Practice Group Leader in providing input and recommendations to the Associate Compensation and Review Committee for associate compensation.


Management and Policy Compliance


  • Use diligent efforts to see that practice group members meet revenue and expense budgetary goals and expectations, including billable and investment hours.

  • Review and approve new clients and matters as part of intake process and enforce related standards for the practice group, consistent with Firm guidelines in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.

  • Monitor and enforce timekeeping and billing practices in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.

  • Determine, with input from the Practice Group Leader, Managing Partner, and the Firms financial resources, the viability/profitability of requests for accommodations or alternative billing/pricing arrangements.

  • Work with Accounting team, as needed, to help address write-off and write-down requests and expense approval requests that required practice group input in accordance with established firm policies.

  • Support the Practice Group Leader, as needed, in other matters regarding practice group management, approvals, and initiatives.


Education and Experience:


  • BA/BS required; MBA and/or JD strongly preferred.

  • Five or more years of supervisory and/or management experience in a professional office setting required.

  • Previous experience in law firm management preferred.


General Salary for this role: $100,000 - $140,000 based on education and experience.
