Brilliant Detroit Overview 

In 2015 Brilliant Detroit was created to provide a radically new approach to kindergarten readiness in neighborhoods. The idea was to create a unique delivery model in our approach to early childhood development by using underutilized housing stock to create early child and family centers in neighborhoods. Brilliant Detroit homes provide holistic services for kids 0-8 predicated on evidence-based programs around health, family support, and education. Brilliant Detroit was born to create kid success neighborhoods. Today, in each location, neighbors come together for fellowship, activities and learning to assure school readiness, and provide needed support for families.

Job Summary


In partnership with The Center for Success, Brilliant Detroit is looking for a Literacy Program Coordinator. The Literacy Program Coordinator hosts, schedules and monitors virtual literacy mentor sessions, coordinates resources, and engages consistently with youth, mentors, and families. The successful candidate must be driven by the organizations mission and vision. 


Responsibilities and Duties 


Literacy Instruction

  • Participate in the creation and updating of needed program materials, in coordination with leadership staff

  • Monitor and support students and mentors to facilitate strong relationships

  • Develop and maintain positive, connected, solution oriented relationships with caregivers, students and mentors

  • Meet regularly with leadership staff to maximize program quality and provide staff voice and input.

  • Attend monthly staff meetings as required. This includes at least 1 monthly staff meeting, a team meeting every 2 to 4 weeks, and consistent attendance to Equity Learning Community meetings.

  • Support literacy mentors with completed lessons in student folders and consistent feedback in the mentor log after each session

  • Host and monitor weekly evening zoom sessions to ensure student safety and mentor support

Program Administration


  • Ensure timely and accurate records of mentor and student attendance and enrollment information

  • Send consistent reminders to families and mentors

  • Coordinates program partners and logistics

  • Collaborates with staff and partners to ensure assessments and benchmarking are completed for students    



  • A clear understanding of academic and literacy development and a passion for working to help children succeed

  •  Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish

  • Highly organized organizational skills

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

  • Commitment to efficient use of resources

  • Experience managing a large number of volunteers and supervising multiple staff Members

  • Experience with email, databases, Microsoft Office software, Google Applications.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency is a plus but not required


Working Conditions

  • The ability to work cooperatively with different personalities and individuals of diverse racial/economic/cultural backgrounds

  • This position requires evening work and occasional  weekends; Programs run 4-6:30pm (M-TH)

  • Local travel may be required, reliable transportation needed

  • This is currently a virtual position with the understanding that it could transition into in-person work in the future, depending on public health/COVID circumstances

  • Covid vaccinated applicants preferred
