PURPOSE OF THE JOB


The Legal Services Coordinator will support the work of Human Rights Firsts Washington, D.C.-based Refugee Representation team. This staff member will work closely with our asylum-seeking clients, and in-house and volunteer attorneys during clients immigration cases. The legal services coordinator will coordinate and conduct initial screenings and interviews with refugees seeking legal representation; handle the administrative details of our asylum legal representation work, including scheduling and case management; and assist with outreach and advancing advocacy goals related to asylum and refugee protection. 


 


MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


 



  • Assist in responding to inquiries and requests for assistance from asylum seekers in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore metropolitan area, including scheduling, coordinating, and conducting initial screening interviews;

  • Perform in-depth, detailed interviews with potential clients, who are often victims of torture and human rights abuses, to ascertain their eligibility for asylum and representation through our program;

  • Assist in placing accepted cases with appropriate volunteer attorneys; communicate in a responsive and efficient manner with volunteer attorneys, other human rights organizations, and the public; organize legal trainings; and support volunteer attorneys;

  • Contact volunteer attorneys and clients to obtain updates on asylum cases; coordinate closing cases; and serve as liaison between volunteer attorneys and in-house Refugee Representation staff, as needed;

  • Participate in and support workshops and presentations that provide asylum seekers with legal information about the asylum process;

  • Assist in managing the Refugee Representation teams administrative/clerical needs, including:

  • Compiling informational packets and case summaries;

  • Entering, updating, maintaining, and retrieving data, including entering new cases and contacts into our client database, and coordinating with the Information Technology department on database and technology issues;

  • Maintaining and organizing electronic and hard copy files, correspondence, legal and policy publications, and legal representation files; and

  • Scheduling meetings; 

  • Support outreach and advocacy objectives, including assistance with web materials, written materials, coalition-building, newsletters, and e-advocacy;

  • Assist with recruiting, orienting, and supervising interns, ensuring that these volunteers are fully, meaningfully, and intellectually engaged;

  • Assist with foundation reporting and maintaining relevant data; and 

  • Other duties as requested based on the department and/or organizations need. 



 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE 


 



  • A Bachelors degree and at least one year of work experience in a related field (including internships); strong preference for previous experience working with asylum seekers or refugees;

  • Spanish fluency (reading and writing) required; fluency in other languages, particularly French or Arabic, is also a plus;

  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication;

  • Superb organizational skills, including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously, work under pressure, and meet deadlines;

  • Capacity to take initiative, prioritize duties, and work independently, while functioning as a member of a team;

  • Ability to communicate patiently, respectfully, and empathically with individuals from a variety of backgrounds;

  • Excellent computer and online research skills, including familiarity with database, word processing, and spreadsheet applications; and

  • Good judgment and attention to detail.
