We are seeking highly motivated individuals with an interest in both basic and translational biomedical research, particularly in cancer epigenetics, to work as a Laboratory Technician III or Research Assistant I or II in the laboratory of Xiaofeng Wang, PhD. We welcome individuals with a Bachelor's degree in basic molecular biology, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, or computer science. Applicants should send a brief statement of research experience and/or interest along with their resume. Dr. Wang's lab is interested in studying the function of a family of chromatic remodeling complexes, particuarly the SWI/SNF (mBAF) complex, which is mutated in more than 20% of human cancers.



Position Purpose

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN III
To set up and conduct a variety of laboratory tests and experiments by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques in support of in support of basic and translational biomedical research studies directed at cancer epigenetics.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT I
To set up and conduct a variety of laboratory tests and experiments in support of basic and translational biomedical research studies directed at cancer epigenetics by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT II
To set up and conduct a variety of laboratory tests and experiments in support of basic and translational biomedical research studies directed at cancer epigenetics by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques.



Skills & Knowledge

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN III

  • Competence in several laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment and good organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT l:

  • Competence in several laboratory methods, procedures and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments, e.g. basic molecular biology, cloning, PCR, biochemistry, western blotting, cell culture, immunofluorescence, microscopy, mouse handling and maintenance of mouse colonies. Experience in flow cytometry and performing mouse surgery is desired but not required.
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and presentation, and on-line literature search engines.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Monday through Friday, approximately 8 am to 5 PM (with one hour for lunch). Flexibility in schedule is required to meet the needs of the research laboratory; some evenings or weekends may be required if deemed necessary by principal investigator.

This position is a 24-month term position.

This position is funded by a grant. Continuation is based upon available .

  • Conducts specified laboratory experiments/tests, utilizing a range of established methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Accomplishes necessary preparations to include equipment and instrumentation set-up, specimen preparation, etc.
  • Observes experiments/tests while in progress; records observations; troubleshoots as necessary.
  • Reconciles results that are disparate from anticipated findings; re-runs techniques as necessary.
  • Notifies principal investigator of problems associated with experiments, measurements, or analyses and suggests changes to methods, procedures, or techniques as appropriate.
  • Maintains laboratory notebook recording tasks performed.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods

  • Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation/testing and presents findings to Principal Investigator.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, etc.
