Position Purpose

The Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab (CANlab), directed by Professor Tor Wager, studies the effects of expectations, social and interpersonal context, self-regulation, and learning on the human brain and physiology. We study brain responses related to pain, emotion, social rejection, empathy, and craving. We are looking for a motivated, high-performing individual to join our team as a laboratory manager. This individual will manage operations across multiple projects, including neuroimaging experiments with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), combined electroencephalography-fMRI, community outreach assessing brain health and inflammation, and more. The lab manager will keep multiple, complex neuroscientific research projects moving forward simultaneously. They will be in charge of general project management as well as laboratory equipment repair, recruitment efforts, and scanner time coordination. They will also harmonize work between lab teams in different departments and involved parties on and off campus.

General Research Support

  • Manages research teams using scheduling, project management, and wiki software to ensure research moves forward in a timely and well-documented manner.
  • Coordinates a variety of activities to support CAN Lab functions.
  • Administers and tracks monthly expenditures for multiple accounts to ensure accurate records for approved grants and budgets.
  • May arrange the logistics associated with grant administration such as gathering information, gathering signatures and compiling documents.
  • Assesses feasibility of proposed research investigations and may prepare analyses of project costs (salaries, equipment, travel, patient reimbursement, medical or laboratory fees, participating satellite expenses, administration and overhead, etc.).
  • Hires and supervises student interns, student office assistants or other office staff.
  • Keeps PI informed of status of research activities, problem areas, etc. and consults on specific problems.

Lab Management

  • Oversees the day-to-day management of the principal investigator's laboratory to ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of equipment and supplies.
  • Serves as a source of information on department policies and procedures.
  • Serves as primary point of contact representing the Lab to the department and external constituencies.
  • Establishes and maintains lab files and databases to ensure accuracy and accessibility of information.
  • Records minutes at meetings and prepares for supervisor review and distribution.
  • Monitors equipment and instrument performance and instructs others in proper laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Maintains lab operating procedures on internal wiki.
  • Records grant progress reports and milestones, equipment inventories, the ordering of supplies/software, and research-related payments.
  • Manages IRB applications from application through amendments.
  • Maintains schedules for lab meetings, visiting scholars, and supervisor schedules.
  • Coordinates major recurring Lab activities including those with related labs and external collaborators
  • Arranges itineraries and orients new or visiting faculty, staff and guest speakers.
