POSITION SUMMARY

The Laboratory Assistant II performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations.

This position assists with the handling and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. Duties include verification and labeling of specimens, assisting with training and education of POCT testing personnel, preparing and issuing blood products, review and follow up of daily and monthly reports and maintaining necessary supplies. This positon will also assist in maintaining regulatory compliance in POCT and Transfusion Service by maintain databases of information and tracking and trending lab data.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences or related field acceptable to the certifying agency (ASCP) is required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: n/a

EXPERIENCE: 2 years of laboratory experience required. Knowledge of laboratory information system utilization must be acquired after 3 months on the job training. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Must have the ability to distinguish colors.

Demonstrates the ability to perform the department specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.

This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting.

The department specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists the essential functions of this position.

Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.
