As a member of the Online Learning department team, the Instructional Designer / Virtual Course Manager position is an exciting role at the university that supports faculty developing online course spaces and holding online virtual course meetings. The university's core and adjunct faculty are leaders in their field and the Instructional Designer / Virtual Course Manager assists faculty to share their expertise by teaching in webinars with the support of online course spaces within the university's Canvas Learning Management System and other technologies.


  • Assists faculty with the development of online course spaces, including, organizing course content, selecting and formatting student activities that are appropriate for the course level and creating assessment artifacts (assignments, exams, question banks)
  • Manages multiple instructional design projects simultaneously and shifts priority of projects based on evolving community needs
  • Develops self-paced and in-person (webinar) faculty and student focused technology training with a focus on browser-based and LTI tools
  • Evaluates weekly virtual course meeting schedule and organizes resources to provide support to faculty and students; in coordination with other department staff, monitors and responds to virtual course meeting support requests
  • Completes other tasks as determined by the director

Job Requirements:


  • Undergraduate degrees from a regionally accredited university or college with a minimum of nine semester credit hours (or equivalent) of education and / or instructional design course work with a minimum of one three semester credit hour course (or equivalent) focused on curriculum
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately in a dynamic environment
  • 1 - 3 years instructional design experience
  • Proficient with Office 365 apps (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience working with HTML 5, ftp and streaming media
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently develop, promote and deliver effective training to groups and an ability to do so on a regular basis in webinar format
  • Possess foundational knowledge of higher education instructional formats (in-person, hybrid, online) and levels (undergraduate, graduate) and associated pedagogical best-practices for online learning
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently communicate orally and in writing; ability to apply emotional intelligence to all communication


  • Graduate degree
  • Instructional design experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Teams
  • Familiarity with Canvas learning management system
  • Experience creating SCORM learning assets
  • Familiarity with Jenzabar EX SIS and Ellucian Colleague SIS
  • Knowledge of video and audio encoding standards

  • Working Conditions[BC1] -- Duties are performed in an office environment at a desk or computer terminal at the university's Mission Street campus, in the university's technology training facility (standing, walking, bending for typically 60-minute intervals) at the university's Mission Street campus, and occasionally at other campuses, clinics, and special event locations. Generally, duties are performed during standard business hours except for the start of the fall and spring semesters and occasional special events where evening and weekend work may be required at the Mission Street campus and at special event locations within the commuting area.
  • Background Check -- Due to the sensitivity and requirements of our positions, you should expect to undergo and be cleared of an employment background/criminal check, if extended an offer for employment. You may also be asked to provide proof of educational degree(s), licenses or credentials pertinent to the position. If your job requires driving on behalf of CIIS you will be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license.
