Instructional Designer

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for an Instructional Designer. This position will be located in either the Global Operations Center in Wheeling WV or our Sacramento office.

Do you want to be part of a professional dynamic team crafting and developing online and print training materials to support the firm’s training initiatives? As an Instructional Designer, you will bring instructional content to life by developing engaging and interactive eLearning for use in all Orrick online and blended courses. We expect you'll understand the firm technologies to an advanced level, and collaborate with the IT Trainers, IT Support Teams & Subject Matter Experts in our practice offices, and other project teams.


• We will have you prepare training, courseware and communications for technology based initiatives.
• You will work with project teams to identify, evaluate and test new applications as well as upgrades to existing applications, and develop task and practice specific training and documentation for those applications.
• You will develop needs assessments, project plans and calendars for projects.
• You will review and edit user documentation and communications from other teams.
• You will translate technical jargon into easily understood instructions.
• You will draft procedures for courseware creation and management.
• Develop branded print and online materials that promote efficient use of firm systems and solutions.
• You will ensure consistency in the branding and messaging for firm training.
• Prepare production quality videos, including interactive online and blended courses.
• You will build graphics and illustrations to support blended interactive learning programs.
• You will research, compile and maintain training websites such as Lynda.com, Coursera and YouTube to supplement in house training with cost-effective web-based solutions.
• You will serve as administrator of designated firm learning management systems (LMS).
• Develop advanced knowledge of all core applications; and develop an overview understanding of additional applications.
• Assist in the delivery of remote one-on-one, demo-style training and remote support as needed via WebEx.
• You will be a functional dedicated resource for assigned applications including all courseware tools, and deliver training on those topics.
• Take initiative and develop expertise in rapid eLearning authoring tools and training approaches, and deliver train-the-trainer sessions for trainers and other support teams.
• Serve as a critical issue resource for IT and courseware-related questions.
• You will establish positive relationships with anyone responsible for training to develop training materials that meet the needs of other offices and practices.
• You will attend and participate in vendor demonstrations and professional trainer associations to maintain skills and to assist Applications Department in application analysis and recommendations.
• Some (infrequent) travel in support of training initiatives may be necessary.


• Undergraduate degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or related work experience in eLearning, Instructional Design, or Education.
• Significant experience in the development of e-learning and other educational products.
• Experience with the development and delivery of training on IT systems.
• Experienced user of Adobe Captivate.
• Knowledge of SCORM, AICC and/or xAPI (TinCan) conformant development for courseware.
• Ability to transform scripts, storyboards or other similar directions into creative and engaging multimedia activities.
• Audio recording and editing experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Detail oriented person who is passionate about getting things right.
