Institutional Research Analyst II (Higher Education) - District Office
Essential Job Functions:
- Write, edit, debug, and finalize programming code for use in extraction of higher education data, data manipulation, and data processing in order to facilitate statistical analyses using parameter driven methods.
- Create reports, analyses, models, and applications of college student success using structured data from a variety of higher education sources, such as, databases, web APIs, spreadsheets, or other formatted documents.
- Communicate with internal (College) and external clients regarding ad hoc data requests; ascertain requirements for successful and meaningful completion of data requests. Coordinate quality control for ad hoc requests for simple descriptive statistical reports or models. Ensure compliance with College standards, policies, and procedures regarding acceptable and ethical use of College data.
- Support development and maintenance of programming code and datasets to support College-wide use of internal reports, data analysis, and data-driven decision-making such as economic and demographic characteristics, student success key performance indicators, instructional program accreditation, core enrollment reports, program review and effectiveness, program outcomes assessment, general education outcomes assessment, and general continuous improvement.
- Support development and maintenance of code and large databases for use with external College partners, projects, or initiatives, such as the THECB, IPEDS, ATD, Pathways, Frontier Set, Voluntary Framework of Accountability, Texas Workforce Commission, and the National Student Clearinghouse.
- Support compilation of data from internal and external sources to maintain the Higher Education Common Data Set (CDS) for external national survey reporting.
- Learn intermediate to advanced programming skills and techniques via online learning resources; contributes to departmental professional development efforts.
- Support collecting and interpreting data for use by the College-wide community.
Additional Job Functions:
- Serve on College councils and committees as requested to provide institutional research expertise and support for College-wide projects or initiatives
- Provide interpretive assistance and/or training to users of institutional research data.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have intermediate level proficiency in a statistical software package for a language such as SAS, Python, or R.
- Ability to use a scripting language, such as Python, Ruby, JavaScript (NodeJS), to write code to automate tasks including processing data and producing reports.
- Ability to work with data users to ensure College reports are appropriate for needs and to prepare user-friendly oral or written descriptions of College data to ensure users are able to locate, understand, interpret accurately, and validly use data.
- Knowledge of institutional research methodology needs assessment, data collection, and quantitative analyses, and analytical and numerical skills
- Intermediate to Advanced MS Excel skills in formatting data for tables and graphs
- Ability to communicate effectively with support personnel to mid-level College administrators in written, oral, and visual formats to ensure data users are able to interpret accurately and validly use data for decision-making.
- Skill and ability to work collaboratively in an open office environment and to adapt to and contribute to change that requires continuous learning, initiative, and problem solving.
- Ability to innovate and to think critically to identify prospective improvements to processes across areas of responsibility.
- Ability to work independently with attention to details, accuracy, and organization while prioritizing and coordinating diverse, varied projects with effective time and task management involving multiple stakeholders.
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree in quantitative science-related discipline or commensurate experience or credentials
Preferred Education:
- Master's degree in quantitative science-related discipline or commensurate experience or credentials.
Required Experience:
- Two years experience as quantitative research analyst performing data analysis, predictive modeling, or machine learning with a statistical package such as Python, SAS, or R.
Preferred Experience:
- Three years experience in a research analyst role in higher education, a community college; one year of experience writing SQL queries and scripting code to build data pipelines that fetch and process data from APIs, databases, and files; one year experience using a scripting language such as, Python, Ruby, JavaScript (NodeJS), to process data and automate tasks.
Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
- SAS Certified Programmer, Level One or above
