The Head of PKDM will lead a talented group of PKDM scientists with responsibility for all modalities in the R&D pipeline. This represents an opportunity to play a significant role in assuring successful decisions in the effective advancement of Amgen's robust pipeline. The Head will be a member of the Research Leadership Team which is comprised of the following functions: Oncology and Inflammation, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disorders; Therapeutic Discovery; Translational Safety & Bioanalytical Sciences; and PKDM. As part of this team, the leader of PKDM will bring insights on how Amgen's overall strategy, future trends in the field, and the competitive landscape impact Amgen's R&D portfolio.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President Research, the Head will lead a high performing and high functioning global team which is headquartered in South San Francisco with additional personnel distributed across other sites -Burnaby (Canada), Shanghai and Thousand Oaks, CA. The PKDM organization is divided into 4 key functional areas:
  • Bioanalytical
  • ADME Pharmacology
  • Biotransformation
  • Preclinical Modeling and Simulation


Together, they work on early, mid and late stage pipeline products across all modalities and therapeutic areas, while also providing important support for marketed compounds. This organizational strategy offers broad career development and a more flexible approach to resource allocation. The emergence of novel modalities puts a high premium on cutting-edge capabilities in PKDM to understand how various mechanisms influence the uptake, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of diverse drug substances including small molecules, complex synthetics, biologics, and various types of multispecific therapeutics. This individual will continue to develop a culture fostering breakthrough capabilities that include using human genetics to understand how the body acts upon a drug.

Responsibilities:

This is a senior role in the industry and one where the appointed candidate will have high visibility both internally and externally.

Key responsibilities for the Head of PKDM are:
  • Establish scientific strategy to support the pipeline with an emphasis on building novel analytical and modeling techniques to advance molecules through the R&D pipeline
  • Work with partner functions to develop outsourcing strategies to maximize productivity and discovery support
  • Mentor staff in Research for PK/modeling and ADME solutions with PKDM subgroups and across functions
  • Build upon existing external eminence with key academic institutions that train high quality students in PK, biophysics, analytical chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Represent Amgen at external conferences and network to identify emerging scientific advances and recruiting opportunities
  • Set publication and presentation strategy to guide external reputation and influence regulatory bodies and the industrial scientific community e.g. IQ Consortium
  • Review scientific work for projects focused on design and execution of experiments that define clearance mechanisms across species to underwrite toxicology species selection, pharmacology and PK differences across species, and strategy for human PK predictions. All of these items are critical to the narrative for IND packages that link together 2.6.2, 2.6.4 and 2.6.6
  • Review IND documents, FDA and EMA meeting material preparation (TYPE C meetings, RTQs)
  • Link preclinical data to clinical transition through critical pipeline governance meetings and through INDs
  • Manage headcount and budget for department
  • Engage staff in scientific activities that brand Amgen as a world-class scientific enterprise and represent PKDM on the Research Senior Leadership Team


Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 6 years of Pharmacokinetics and drug Metabolism experience OR
  • Master's degree and 10 years of Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism experience AND 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or DVM (or equivalent) with a minimum of 15 plus years successfully working in the bio/pharma sector in PKDM
  • A proven track record of scientific expertise in the pharma/biotech industry
  • Experience with innovative and forward-thinking approaches
  • Expertise in developing and executing vision and strategy to enhance capabilities
  • Ability to drive a highly capable scientific organization that is nimble and flexible to continue to develop new platforms with an eye to the future state of the industry
  • Prior success in recruiting and building a strong and high-performing team
