We Are:

The Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC) is a new accelerator research facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). IARC provides a state-of-the-art facility for research, development and industrialization of particle accelerator technology. One of the main focuses is to develop partnerships with private industry for the commercial and industrial application of accelerator technology for energy and the environment, medicine, industry, national security and discovery science. Fermilab aims to place the state of Illinois in a position as a world leader in accelerator research, development, and industrialization.

A senior-level engineer, scientist or business professional is being sought for Fermilab's Head of Technology Development and Industry Engagement position. The selected candidate will report to the Deputy Director and with limited supervision, develop, implement, maintain and direct the Laboratory's technology-development activities with a focus on driving opportunities for the Laboratory to apply its technical capabilities to matters important and relevant to other programs, agencies, and partners. This work includes technology scouting, market analysis, industrial engagement, and business development in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations, requirements and standards and Department of Energy (DOE) orders.

You Will
  • Manage the Illinois Accelerator Research Center.
  • Partner with the Office of Partnership Agreements and Intellectual Property Management, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and Corporate Accounting.
  • Assist the Deputy Director with identifying issues, preventing problems, and mitigating impacts.
  • Develop strategies, formulate short and long-range plans with subordinate managers and direct the activities of subordinate managers for technology development activities, from research through first article demonstration.
  • Encourage and support the development, disclosure, and protection of intellectual property across the entire Laboratory, with specific emphasis on technologies that can be advanced toward commercial application through collaborative research and development partnerships with industry, universities, and other laboratories.
  • Identify technologies best commercialized by spin-out companies or corporate-partner engagement; provide leadership and oversight for such development and collaborate with appropriate organizations to secure support and ensure compliance with DOE rules.
  • Gather business intelligence, develop value propositions, and develop and execute business development strategies for selected technologies.
  • Develop partnerships to commercialize research results and technology developments including writing, reviewing, and submitting proposals to third parties including other federal programs and agencies and corporate entities.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with industry, including acquiring industrial grants and contracts; support these efforts through meetings with Laboratory staff about their research, identifying external entities with interest in these area(s), and developing research and development partnerships.
  • Foster partnership with the University of Chicago's Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to share resources, services, and opportunities; develop combined program offerings to enhance laboratory culture.
  • Work with the Laboratory's Chief Technology Officer to participate in and guide the Laboratory's Technology Committee.
  • Coordinate, manage, and supervise cross-functional teams including staff from other Divisions and Sections to achieve project goals.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders in Fermi Research Alliance, LLC, and the DOE Office of High-Energy Physics to develop common strategies, pool resources, combine strengths, and drive results.
  • Serve as Director of the Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC) with concomitant responsibilities for managing associated budget and personnel.
  • Actively support Laboratory commitments to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices.


We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or other physical-sciences field and 10+ years of experience (Master's Degree in Engineering, Science or related field combined with 5+ years of experience and business experience is preferred.)
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience required
  • Demonstrated understanding of technology-development life cycle and public/private sector partnerships
  • Specialized experience in entrepreneurialism, small-business start-ups, and/or corporate research
  • Strong strategic, financial and commercial know-how, likely through an MBA or equivalent exposure to commercial and entrepreneurial businesses
  • Superior problem-solving skills addressing multi-part problems with high levels of uncertainty
  • Track-record in delivering complex multi-faceted projects that combine objectives in technology development, influencing people and commercial outcomes
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to work effectively with different kinds of communities with different norms and communication styles.
  • Experience in delivering work through people not line managed
  • Willingness to travel to and from Fermilab in Batavia, IL and the University of Chicago (downtown Chicago), with occasional trips to cities within the United States
