FUNCTION: The Urban League seeks to build a more equitable Rochester by creating supports and services for populations that have been historically marginalized. The Equity and Advocacy Officer (EAO) will build upon these efforts and serve as a thought leader on the subjects of community, equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice. The EAO is a self-directed, hands-on practitioner who ensures best practices are shared throughout the community and inspires awareness and enthusiasm about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) initiatives.

REPORTS TO: President and CEO


MANAGES/COACHES: Equity and Advocacy Staff

RESPONSIBILITIES: S/he/they are responsible for setting and implementing an overarching vision of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) for the Urban League and the community it serves. This position requires an inspiring, collaborative, courageous, innovative, and visionary leader with outstanding people and management skills. The EAO partners with the executive leadership team to develop and drive forward the Urban League of Rochester's key strategies. The EAO leads the Equity and Advocacy Division and DEIJ efforts, including Interrupt Racism and Racial Equity and Justice Initiatives. The EAO demonstrates the skills to lead a strategy to help the Greater Rochester community become more diverse, antiracist, equitable, and inclusive.

The EAO Officer is a Visionary and Strategist

Develops a strategy rooted in research, best practice, and community voice

Partners with leaders internally and externally to define ULR's future vision for a more equitable Rochester

Develops and executes ULR's vision for equity and inclusion

Monitors progress toward ULR's DEIJ vision and achievement of goals

Oversees Interrupt Racism and Racial Equity and Justice Initiatives (REJI)

Develops a citywide Stakeholder's Coalition bringing various equity voices together

Plans and leads DEIJ training, summits, conferences, and advocacy efforts

Develops and implements DEIJ business plans

Provides leadership and counsel to Interrupters, REJI Change Teams, and faculty

Represents the Urban League at community tables focused on diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion

Develops strategic partnerships to further DEIJ initiatives

Creates and implements a strategy to increase DEIJ program participants & facilitate connections with for-profit leaders

Serves as a resource to the community to help move equity work forward

Regularly analyzes challenges and barriers

Drafts strategies and collaborates on solutions to accomplish DEIJ and measurable results

Stays current on DEIJ research

Manages the department's staff but also works closely with all ULR team members

Ensures alignment among different divisions and service lines (Housing, Youth Education and Development, Developmental Disabilities, Business, Family and Children Services and Workforce Development) to support the unique needs of participants

Examines Urban Leagues policies, procedures, and practices and identifies what needs to evolve, change, or initiated

. Requirements:

This work requires superb communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong diplomacy skills. The EAO is a strong listener and able to build a robust network of partnerships.

More specifically, s/he/they need to:

Develop consistent communication and feedback mechanisms to identify, discuss, and address equity issues impacting our partners, participants, and staff

Provide technical assistance to partners, collaborators, and staff

Stay abreast of research and best practices in equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion

Develop communication systems to share best practices, highlight bright spots, and keep the community apprised of key initiatives and activities

Contribute to the grant writing process for various equity funding streams

Oversee consciousness-raising efforts, including affinity groups, monthly DEIJ newsletter, and regular workshops/presentations/seminars/summits/conferences/ celebrations

Manage and strengthen the League's relationships and collaborations with external partners to deliver training and recruit cohort members

Leads strategic engagement, provide monthly written board updates, advances collaboration on equity strategic identity, and develops a roadmap

Other skills and abilities:

Ability to engage with diverse staff. Engender trust, collaboration, and partnership

Strong interpersonal skills; able to quickly establish credibility to develop and manage productive relationships with internal and external individuals and agencies

Strong background in managing change

Deep content knowledge of the diversity, equity, justice, and inclusiveness research base and best practices for organizations striving to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive

Strong management expertise; able to manage multiple projects and to move quickly from one to another, and meet deadlines

Ability to create/design adult learning and teaching of the content and skills associated with operating with an equity lens

Ability to remain solution-focused and respectful in all interactions

Ability to maintain accurate records and necessary paperwork

Ability to provide support and training to other staff

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree with 5 years or more years of leadership experience in DEJI or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree preferred

Understanding of culturally-specific resources available within the community.

Effective intercultural communication skills and the ability to advocate/address issues of diversity

Sensitivity and understanding of specific barriers which may lead to lack of access and engagement

Experience developing and implementing training

Must adhere to ULR's non-discrimination policies

Ability to effectively interact with co-workers and clients with diverse ethnic backgrounds, religious views, cultural backgrounds, lifestyles, and sexual orientation, and to treat each individual with respect and dignity
