The MTA Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority (SIRTOA) provides reliable 24 hours a day, seven days a week passenger service between the island's south shore communities and the Staten Island Ferry at St. George.  While managed by New York City Transit, SIRTOA is a separate and distinct MTA subsidiary.  SIRTOA employs over 300 people to manage and operate 64 R44 passenger cars and 21 stations.  It provides efficient and effective service to 30,000 customers daily. 

The majority of SIRTOA’ s customers are weekday commuters traveling to the St. George Terminal for connection to lower Manhattan by way of the Staten Island Ferry. SIRTOA is composed of five divisions: Operations, Maintenance, Finance & Procurement, Engineering & Capital Programs and Operations Support.  SIRTOA offers a variety of job opportunities including, Conductors, Track Workers, Electrical Maintainers, Machinists and paid Internships.

SIRTOA’s Maintenance of Way Division is seeking an experienced Equipment Maintainer. This role will perform preventative maintenance, repair, rebuilding and/or replacement work on self-propelled special equipment such as tampers, truck aligners and cranes, as well as on heavy, medium and light gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. Equipment Maintainers are responsible also for the repair and maintenance of special equipment and tools such as snow blowers, stationary and portable power generators, welding units, grinders, cutters, hand-held tampers and track drills. Additional responsibilities may include assisting the Senior Equipment Maintainer in the design and fabrication of parts when replacement parts are not available.  From time to time, Maintainers are required to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair New York City Transit vehicles, when the repair or maintenance of which is beyond the technical abilities of N.Y.C. Transit vehicle maintainers. 

Although the greater part of the Equipment Maintainer’s work is performed at the Non-Revenue Shop, they are required to visit field sites for the repair or adjustment of equipment, vehicles, and special tools.  Additionally, they are required to report to sites on streets and thoroughfares where SIRTOA vehicles may have become inoperative and need repairs or adjustments in order continue to its destination or be returned to the NRS Shop.

When directed by the Senior Electronic Equipment Maintainer, Equipment Maintainers will train current or new employees in the operation and use of self-propelled heavy equipment in cranes, tampers and track aligners, as well as in the operation of vehicles and special units or tools.  They are responsible, also, for the on-going inspection of such equipment to ensure that usage is in accordance with required methods and procedures, and for reporting violations thereof to the Senior Electronic Equipment Maintainer. Equipment Maintainers will also be required to attend NYCT offsite mandatory training as needed.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of three years’ experience with repairing and troubleshooting of diesel engines, gasoline engines, small equipment and automotive electrical systems. Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent. 

License Requirements

Applicants must possess a valid CDL-B driver’s license free from violations and restrictions.  Selected applicants will be allowed up to six (6) months from the date of hire to obtain a CDL-B Driver’s License.
