Fermilab's Applied Physics & Superconducting Technology Division/Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) department is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Physicist II to support Vertical Test Stand (VTS) activities. The Vertical Test Facility is a critical component of SRF operation. Primary job responsibilities will be in support of cryogenic testing of SRF cavities, including characterizing cavity performance, instrumentation setup and checkout, and developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting data acquisition systems.

You Will
  • Design and develop equipment or sub-systems, including specification of components and performance verification requirements.
  • Operate facilities or complex equipment to perform data collection and tests.
  • Monitor tests and examine operations of facilities to isolate and define problems with proper functioning of equipment and to insure efficient functioning and conformance with safety specifications and regulations.
  • Develop plans to monitor the operation and maintenance of equipment used in advanced physics measurements or detector development at the sub-system level, detecting trends and debugging equipment.
  • Plan and assist in inquiries to discover facts or to test hypotheses concerning the equipment or system in assigned area.
  • Evaluate findings and develop plans and improvements to meet project or operation goals that bring a project to operating status.
  • Detect irregularities of a system through a complete understanding of a system and its subsystems.
  • Interact with other specialists to coordinate the modification and repair of the system and to propose new, improved or upgraded systems.
  • Select and apply appropriate engineering standards to meet assignment objectives.
  • Determine vendors and technologies for performance evaluation.
  • Determine measurement/tests needed to evaluate system performance.
  • Implement modest changes in scope as required according to predefined change control procedures based on analytical results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.
  • Abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.

We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or Engineering (Masters or PhD preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years' relevant work experience
  • Experience with cryogenic measurements is preferred
  • Experience with radiofrequency measurements is preferred
  • Experience with Labview is preferred
