Job Title:Engineer/Scientist II – Electromagnetic Pulse/Electric Power Systems

Job Summary and Description:

The position will support a variety of R&D projects with emphasis on projects that support National Security, such as assessing the potential impacts of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) on the electric grid, designing HEMP hardened substations, performing R&D to develop and/or improve existing HEMP mitigation measures for civilian infrastructure, and performing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) analysis of substations, distribution systems, generating facilities and telecommunications systems.  Additional areas of support may include steady-state and time-domain analysis of power system systems and design/assessment of industrial control systems (ICS).

 

Only US Citizens will be considered for the position.  Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain a National Security Clearance.  Candidates with an active national security clearance and a recently completed (24 months or less) background investigation are preferred.

 

The primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Performing MIL-STD-461G/RS105 testing of equipment and systems using a large outdoor guided wave simulator.  Initial focus will be on electronics and communications systems that are found in the substations, distribution systems and generating facilities.
  • Writing and developing test plans and analyzing testing results using software tools such as MATLAB to answer R&D questions.  In many situations the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists.  The use of creative or imaginative thinking is required.
  • Developing time-domain computer models (electromagnetic transients type models) of electric infrastructure and performing simulations to determine the potential impacts of HEMP on the electric grid.  Initial focus will be on substations, distribution systems and generating facilities.
  • Supporting lead engineers in the development and assessment of HEMP mitigation measures for the electric grid
  • Developing original technical reports and presentations to communicate research results to colleagues and clients.
  • Performing complex engineering/ scientific analysis with moderate direction and supervision. Working directly with EPRI staff and moderate interaction with members and industry.
  • Conducting technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.
  • May conduct independent research.
  • Assisting Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Present research externally
  • Understand how work fits across technical area
  • Requires supervision and guidance to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects
  • Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research
  • May participate in multiple projects
  • Individual contributor

 

Additional Job Information:

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering or Physics plus 1 years of relevant experience or a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering or Physics.
  • Experience writing test plans, performing laboratory experiments and documenting and analyzing testing results
  • Basic knowledge of fundamental-frequency power system analysis: per-unit method, symmetrical components, power flow calculations, and short circuit analysis.
  • Basic knowledge of power system components and protection and control methods.
  • Experience in the application of time-domain simulation techniques and creating power system models using electromagnetics transients (EMT) type software programs; experience using MATLAB to solve engineering problems. 
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to learn new technical areas quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
