Position Description:

Position Summary

As a Software Engineer in the Electronics Division, you'll help architect and implement code running on discrete and embedded processors to move and process data at high speeds. You'll work in a variety of languages and targets such as C device drivers, C++ data processors and REST servers, JavaScript clients, and SQL and NoSQL databases. Regardless of language or framework, you'll practice excellent engineering processes, including making well-considered choices in architecture and design patterns, holding design and code reviews, and performing thorough unit, system, and regression testing.

You'll help schedule your own work based on the priorities of the team and of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), and you'll take responsibility for the work you do. Your excellent written and verbal communication skills will allow you to coordinate the actions of many people and to document and present your work. This position will encourage you to invent more effective ways of improving your telescopes, and when you do you'll work with scientists and engineers to schedule, cost, implement, and test them.

The NRAO Science Operations Center is located on the campus of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (www.nmt.edu). Socorro, NM is a small, historic city in the Rio Grande Valley, 75 miles south of Albuquerque. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Socorro offers ample access to outdoor recreation.

In addition to competitive pay, NRAO provides excellent paid time off benefits (vacation and sick leave). Medical, dental and vision plans are effective first day of employment. NRAO's retirement benefit contributes an amount equal to 10 percent of a qualified participant's base pay. No contribution is required of the employee; we also offer an optional supplemental, tax-deferred plan for employee retirement contributions.
