Job Summary: (Short statement of the jobs purpose)

Primarily responsible for both system level and detailed (circuit board level) design and integration requiring a solid overall knowledge of electrical/electronic design practices of Analog/Digital hardware circuits, measurement equipment and test techniques for analog and digital applications. Typical product examples may include handheld, body worn, man-portable and vehicular mounted devices.

The scope of the position requires a range of responsibilities spanning requirements definition, conceptual trade studies, design/analysis/packaging of power, digital equipment, and integration activities. Electrical Engineers are responsible for participating in engineering analysis and evaluation efforts related to complex analog and digital hardware, documenting design approaches, establishing design verification and validation procedures, and developing plans to manufacture assemblies and major sub-assemblies. Electrical Engineers also design, assemble and maintain production test fixtures as required. To bring the designs to reality, Electrical Engineers will develop and maintain partnerships with suppliers and generate necessary requisitions for engineering project activities for which they are responsible.

This position includes all phases of product development from advanced research and development through design and on to production support. Tasks will include development of component requirements, parts selection, addressing obsolescence issues and working closely with design engineering colleagues, supply chain, and quality control members of project teams

Essential Functions*: (Listing of specific duties in each area in order of importance)

  • Detailed implementation of system design approach and parameters including circuit board design.
  • Development and testing of analog and digital circuits and/or assemblies.
  • Data collection and analysis to verify design approach.
  • Documentation of work.
  • Component selection and verification in concert with BOM build and validation.
  • Support fellow engineers in related engineering tasks.
  • Support transition of development to production including development of test fixtures.
  • This position is also responsible for on-going support of legacy products by providing production floor technical assistance and product updates and as well as support of customer requested special requirements.
  • Schematic design and familiar with ECAD software packages.
  • 3D PCB layout using ECAD software packages.
  • Hand soldering to facilitate prototyping of circuits and completed printed circuit board assemblies.
  • Troubleshooting of analog and digital circuits from unit level down to the component level.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team.
  • Ability to solve problems with creative solutions on a short timeline.
  • Comfortable demonstrating technical solutions to internal and external customers.

Education / Training / Skills / Experience:


  • The Engineer shall have experience in an electrical/electronic prototyping or research and development environment and possess a B.S./M.S. EE degree with at least 5 years of progressive and related experience or in lieu of a degree, 10 years of progressive and related work experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with communications systems design with emphasis of analog & digital devices and circuits, and associated control techniques, including designing with microcontrollers.
  • Proficiency in the use of engineering design tools such as linear and non-linear design simulation, and analysis software tools.
  • Current experience with schematic and PCB layout software tools.
  • Understanding and experience with designing and testing of AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies (<1KW).
  • Understanding of engineering to production transition concerns and issues.
  • Good computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
  • Exceptional skill in personal communication; oral and written.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members under limited supervision to meet challenging schedule, technical and cost objectives.
  • High level of initiative and strong work ethic.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally.
  • Must be U.S. or naturalized citizen capable of qualifying for a security clearance.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Virginia Beach, VA (not remote).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Altium Designer experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of Windchill PLM software.
  • Familiarity with 3D ECAD components and structure.
  • Experience with designing for EMI mitigation and compliance.
  • Experience with high-speed network design and interfacing (i.e PHY transceivers).
  • Programming experience of uP/uControllers and FPGAs using HDL/VHDL & C.
  • Advanced soldering skills as it pertains to protype development.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong team player who can incorporate input from others and can generate consensus through inclusion.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
