Position Summary

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is looking for a proactive, results-driven individual to join a highly collaborative and fast-moving team dedicated to identifying and developing industry-academic collaborations in support of the university's research mission. The successful applicant will be experienced in life sciences, with a unique combination of knowledge in research and development, technology transfer and the start-up environment.

As the Director for Innovation and Industry Relations you will be responsible for identifying, leading, valuing, negotiating, and executing strategically aligned collaborations and partnerships to support the research mission of Rosalind Franklin University (RFU), including our new Innovation and Research Park (IRP) and its associated Helix 51 Incubator. Your focus will be on Innovation. In addition, you will work collaboratively with the Managing Director of the IRP in all aspects of the development and implementation of the programming for and development of the companies in RFU's new Helix 51 Incubator. This position will report directly to the Executive Vice President for Research and secondarily to the Managing Director of the IRP.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identification and evaluation of new industry collaborative research opportunities in support of our scientists, the optimization/continuous improvement of existing Helix 51 partnership arrangements, as well as formulation of the appropriate business development & licensing strategy for RFU's growing IP portfolio
  • In collaboration with the Office of Technology Transfer:
    • Actively build business cases and initiate discussions with industry for partnership and out-licensing opportunities.
    • Perform all due diligence activities including business case development, deal structure and governance, financial assessment, and risk and regulatory analysis
    • Communicate with faculty members effectively, partner with them to evaluate new patent disclosures, find value in their technologies and strategize IP protection.

Required Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in business or a life-science field
  • Ten years business experience required including demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and grow new partnerships/collaborations, direct and execute complex contract negotiations and address intellectual property issues
  • Experience and connectivity with the life science industry
  • Must achieve satisfactory results from a background check

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to identify and prioritize risks across functional areas, weigh those appropriately with benefits of investment, and effectively frame business decisions for senior management
  • Excellent organizational, human relations, decision-making and problem-solving capabilities as well as excellent presentation and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability and confidence to effectively function independently, be a self-starter, and a team player.
  • The scientific technology/clinical assessment will require frequent interaction with subject matter experts (e.g. faculty) and appropriate level of comprehension
