General Overview

This position is part of the Rotary magazine team, which is responsible for publishing Rotary Internationals monthly member magazine. You will have the opportunity to put your skills to work on an award-winning publication that reaches more than 400,000 subscribers. Your contribution will help tell Rotarys stories and thereby increase the organizations reach and impact.


This position is responsible for copyediting and proofreading the monthly Rotary magazine, the quarterly Rotary Canada, and related items; working closely with the editors on article organization and development; updating the magazines style guide; ensuring magazine content is consistent with Rotary messaging; and helping plan issues, write headlines, and develop ancillary items.


You Will Have

  • Bachelors degree in journalism or related field

  • At least 5 years of experience as a magazine or newspaper copy editor

  • Superior copyediting and proofreading skills

  • Ability, on tight deadlines, to edit, revise, and resolve questions on articles, captions, headlines, and other ancillary text to ensure engaging, clear, logical. and accurate copy

  • Excellent headline writing skills

  • Mastery of English language and highly trained eye for improving existing material

  • Thorough knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and AP Stylebook

  • Strong research skills and breadth of knowledge in a variety of areas

  • Superlative organizational skills and ability to balance priorities under deadline

  • Familiarity with magazine production and electronic publishing techniques

  • Windows and Mac OS X proficiency and expert Microsoft Word skills; knowledge of Adobe InDesign and InCopy preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills, tact, and flexibility


You Will Be Responsible For

Rotary Magazine

  • Copyediting Rotary magazine and Rotary Canada (a quarterly supplement) for clarity, accuracy, and consistency of style, voice, and tone

  • Proofreading layouts

  • Working closely with editors and production staff to resolve queries

  • Reviewing all print and online proofs for final signoff

  • Updating the magazines style guide in line with current Chicago, AP, and Rotary style manuals

  • Assisting in planning the magazines editorial calendar and managing deadlines

  • Ensuring Rotary magazine is consistent with Rotary International messaging; attending regular magazine team meetings, and inter-team meetings as needed

  • Advising magazine editors on article organization and development; reviewing early manuscript drafts as needed

  • Taking on writing assignments as needed

  • Copyediting ads, web stories, and other items as needed
