We Are:

Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

The Accelerator Division, Mechanical Support Department or Target Systems Department seeks a Cooperative Education Student. Under guided direction, the Cooperative Education Student will be involved in the analysis and design, fabrication, installation and testing of mechanical devices for the accelerator complex. The selected Student may be called upon to perform analytical calculations, as well as utilize computer aided design software and analysis tools to develop and improve component designs. Learning procurement procedures and ordering/tracking components will be included in job duties.

  • Knowledge and capability to perform as a mechanical engineering aide
  • Well-developed communication skills to work with engineers, physicists, drafters, and technicians
  • Ability to use PCs for basic engineering calculations, word processing and data presentation, and computer aided drawing/drafting
  • Ability to be Radiation Worker qualified (on-site training will be provided)
  • Self-motivation and initiative.
  • Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.
  • Abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.

We Are Looking For
  • Eligible student candidates will be enrolled in a Baccalaureate program of study (minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) in an accredited curriculum in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Consideration will be given to students who have completed their freshman year and have demonstrated a strong aptitude in mathematics and basic engineering sciences.
  • Students on a semester based academic calendar are required to work a minimum of 3 alternating semesters, while 4 quarters are required for those on a quarter based academic calendar.
  • Successful completion of Computer Aided Design and/or mechanics of materials course is desirable.
