Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois as well as other locations around the world including; deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and additionally the South Pole.

Fermilab's Scientific Computing Division is seeking a 1-year team Computer/ Electrical Engineer. Under general supervision, performs basic engineering tasks providing fundamental engineering experience and familiarization with the Laboratory's method of project engineering from the design stage through review, procurement, manufacture, installation, test, and operation.

You Will
  • Work closely with colleagues and experimenters to develop DAQ components that meet the needs of experiments.
  • Design, code, test, debug, document, and maintain DAQ and control system components.
  • Analyzes data and performs engineering calculations. Develops designs of specific parts, components or phases of a project.
  • Develop specifications, design, and document for complex engineering design solutions. Work involves applying a variety of standard engineering techniques to assignments that have clear and specified objectives.
  • Plans small projects from inception to completion and brings them to operating status.
  • Participates in procurement, as well as manufacture, installation, testing, and operation.
  • Assists in the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring of budgetary obligations.
  • With review and approval of a supervisor, commits hardware and financial resources, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
  • Serve on safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned.
  • Provide technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, technicians or less senior engineers, as assigned.
  • May participate in technical conferences and publication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Design, implement, test, and debug data acquisition systems related to High Energy Physics.

We Are Looking For
  • Master degree and 1+ years of engineering experience (including internships) or Bachelor degree and 3+ years of engineering experience from an ABET Accredited University.
  • Professional knowledge of basic theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for practicing in the engineering discipline
  • Knowledge of hardware and software
  • Possess basic project planning skills in developing specifications and documents for small projects that involve concepts from inception to completion.
  • Ability to perform a variety of standard engineering techniques.


Relocation is not available for this position.
