Position Overview:

The College of Health Professions invites applications for a tenure-track, 10-month Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position in the Department of Health Sciences beginning August 2020. This position has both undergraduate and graduate teaching opportunities in the graduate Health Science program and the undergraduate Health Education and Promotion program. Salary is competitive; this position includes the State of Maryland benefits package.



  • Applicants must possess a research-focused doctoral degree in public health, health education and promotion, or a closely related discipline. ABD applicants will be considered, but appointment will be at the instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2021.
  • Candidates must have the education and expertise to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: health education and promotion, program planning and evaluation, health education theory, sexual health and other HEP course offerings.  
  • Evidence of a scholarship agenda focused in an area of specialty in relating to the promotion and knowledge of health or closely related field.
  • Success working with diverse populations of students and experience in college teaching is highly desirable.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) and/or Certification in Public Health (CPH) credentials, have potential for externally funded scholarship and research, expertise to teach across a variety of health sciences, and demonstrated success in working with diverse populations and students.
  • Candidates who wish to be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor must have 6 years’ experience teaching in higher education or comparable qualifications, and demonstrate a clear line of scholarship with outcomes.



  • Faculty are assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units (three credit hours each) per academic year. Primary responsibilities include: 1) TEACHING – provide high quality instruction in a variety of public health and health education and promotion courses, develop and refine courses and curricula, and advise and mentor students as they matriculate through the program and prepare to enter the workforce; 2) SCHOLARSHIP – development of a focused area of scholarship that includes refereed publications, professional presentations, external funding, and involvement in scholarly projects with faculty and students; 3) SERVICE – active service participation at the Department, College, University, professional and community levels. For candidates who have an interest and expertise, there are leadership opportunities within the department.



Department of Health Sciences:

The Health Education and Promotion program is one of 10 graduate /undergraduate degree/certificate programs in the interprofessional team-oriented Department of Health Sciences. HEP has 14 fulltime faculty and over 400 undergraduate majors. The graduate program offers the Master of Science degree in health science with concentrations in Administration, Community Health and School Health Education.
