Chemical Operator - Shift Supervisor (Leland, NC)

The role of the shift supervisor is to ensure that operations conducted during the shift are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operating and company policy. The shift supervisor is responsible for supervision of the plant operations on their shift. Additionally, the shift supervisor is responsible for the setup of chemical processes and operation, maintenance, and repair of chemical processing equipment, and for coordinating with the Operations Manager in order to schedule work for the production areas at Amyris. This position is located in Leland, North Carolina.

Responsibilities
    • Follow all company policies and procedures pertaining to ISO 22716-Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) guidelines for cosmetics.
    • Participate in safety programs, committees, or teams, and by conducting safety audits.
    • Provide and maintain a safe work environment by suspending or correcting any activity posing threat to employees, community, environment and equipment.
    • Ensure that all emergency situations are handled in accordance with company policy.
    • Adequately supervise, coordinate and document chemical operations and employee activities during shift.
    • Delegate tasks as necessary (to the lowest possible level) to production team members including chemical operators and material handlers.
    • Observe employees to ensure processes are conducted safely and in accordance with standard operating procedures and company policy.
    • Appropriately enforce company policies and procedures-in relation to process and personnel requirements/ standards-while maintaining communication directly with necessary management personnel.
    • Recommend measures to improve production methods and equipment performance.
    • Recommend changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency.
    • Draw product samples and perform tests to ensure product meets specifications.
    • Operate a variety of process equipment including reaction systems, distillation systems, storage tanks, filters, extractors, autoclaves, reactors, pumps and centrifuges in compliance with prescribed operating procedures.
    • Inspect process equipment for mechanical defects and malfunctions.
    • Train operations personnel in the setup of chemical processes and the safe operations, maintenance, and repair of chemical process equipment.
    • Supervise/ Coordinate/ Perform tasks necessary to maintain SWP3 and SPCC compliance in handling storm water.
    • Setup and adjust indicating control devices.
    • Monitor and record reactions, gauge readings, shift production, and equipment malfunctions.


Qualifications
    • This position typically requires extensive experience as a chemical operator, 3-5 years is preferred.
    • The Shift Supervisor must be knowledgeable in the safe and efficient operation of Amyris' chemical process equipment, Amyris' safety practices, safety policies, employee manual and emergency response procedures.
    • They must have the ability to work under pressure. Basic mathematical and reading skills are required.
    • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
    • Education Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent is required, BS in chemistry or chemical engineering preferred.
    • Physical Requirements
    • All employees must be available to work eight (8) or twelve (12) hour shifts on a rotating schedule which includes days, nights, weekends and occasionally holidays. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb, bend and stoop; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. While working in this job the employee is frequently exposed to weather conditions including occasional extreme heat and cold.
