Bulk Energy Storage Sr. Technical Leader

The position will support the Bulk Energy Storage group’s research efforts on chemical, mechanical, and thermal energy storage with the potential for also supporting research related to carbon capture and storage and low-carbon fuel research (focusing primarily on hydrogen creation and end use). The ideal candidate would have:

  • A Ph.D. in science, technology, engineering, or a related discipline
  • Deep technical and engineering knowledge on larger-scale energy storage systems and a detailed understanding of their required performance characteristics
  • An understanding of the benefits of energy storage technologies and what is necessary for them to be achieved
  • A track record of peer-reviewed journal publications on larger-scale, non-battery energy storage
  • Demonstrated experience making professional technical presentations at conferences
  • Involvement with business development and creating innovative new projects
  • Documented participation in putting together successful government bids and managing government projects, particularly U.S. Department of Energy ones
  • Performed field work related to energy storage and a basic understanding of instrumentation
  • Experience with or interest in doing projects on carbon capture and storage and low-carbon fuel research
  • Experience with power industry cost and performance modeling software (e.g., Aspen Plus™ and GateCycle™)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A history of doing collaborative work in a team environment
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • 8-10 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience.
  • Ability to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects.
  • Required limited supervision and guidance
  • Responsible for the success of individual projects
  • Works closely with members, contractors, staff to manage projects
  • Experience in successful proposal preparation, and marketing activities.
  • Manages multiple projects
  • Responsible for project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer
  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Individual contributor
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Increasing technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert
