Position Purpose

Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and/or tests electrical circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment such as communication equipment, electric buzzer and bell circuits, light sockets, lighting fixtures, fans, switches, office and heating appliances, fire alarms, and clocks. Performs the range of plumbing assignments related to the installation, re-modeling, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems in laboratory and other building facilities.

Installs, modifies, and repairs utility, supply, and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment such as sewage, water, gas, and oil lines, closets, water heaters, valves and pumps. Installs, maintains, and repairs high temperature, steam heating systems.

Tests fire extinguishers using hydrostatic test equipment.

Key Accountabilities

General
Inspects work sites.
Determines work methods, supplies, and tools, and plans working details to accomplish work assignments.
Plans and lays out the installation and modification of systems and equipment.
Follows sketches, wiring diagrams, or blueprints.

Electrician
Plans and lays out the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls.
Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections.
Installs wiring, coupling, conduit, relays, fixtures, and other electrical devices. Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment; connects power supply wires to machines and equipment.
Diagnoses malfunctioning systems and equipment using test equipment and replaces damaged or broken wires and cables. Replaces or repairs faulty electrical and electsonic component of HVAC machines such as relays, switches and motors.
Tests circuits and equipment by use of voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter, and ohmmeter.
Tests emergency power generators to insure operational readiness.
Performs power load transfers from one transformer to another.

Plumbing
Plans needed routing, placement, slant, slope, and fall of systems.
Lays out, fabricates, and assembles piping and fixtures required.
Places and connects air, natural or manufactured gas, sewage and water fixtures and facilities such as building water mains, lavatories, sinks, and air compression equipment.
Assembles pipe sections and fittings that may require threading and pipe bending operations.
Cleans difficult stoppages in drainpipes.
Installs and repairs valves.
Periodically checks piping, fittings, and fixtures for defective parts or connections; disassembles and repairs damaged sections or fabricates replacements.
Inspects and tests piping after the completion of repairs or alterations.
Tests, maintains and repairs emergency showers.
Repairs, replaces, and troubleshoots central distilled water system and laboratory terminal points.
Checks and maintains chemical levels in boiler and chiller water systems.
Recalibrates pneumatic thermostats and repairs pneumatic control valves.

Steamfitting
Checks steam systems for leaks and defects in equipment.
Installs, repairs, and maintains reducing valves and stations, vacuum pumps, expansion locks and expansion joints.
Connects pipes, using threaded, soldered, caulked, brazed, fuzed, or cemented joints.
Increases pressure in pipe systems and observes connected pressure gauge to test systems for leaks.
Installs maintains, repairs, or replaces steam lines, valves, radiators, heaters, storage tanks, sterilizers, steam traps, control valves, fittings, and expansion joints.

Fire Extinguisher Maintenance
Tests extinguishers for conformity with legal specifications, using hydrostatic testing equipment.
Installs cabinets and brackets to hold extinguishers.
Maintains record keeping system for accurate inventory and preventive maintenance program on fire extinguishers.
Keeps informed of current and future fire and safety codes applicable to fire extinguishers.

Preventive Maintenance
Performs preventive maintenance and repair related to the upkeep of the building and related structures, fixtures, and utilities which require use of skills in carpentry and heating and air conditioning.
Installs and maintains refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping.
