Controls System Specialist Accelerated Onboarding Program Overview

Harris' accelerated building automation program provides you the chance to learn and refine the skills necessary for installation of controls systems, as well as provide diagnostic and repair services within half the time it takes to train a specialist in the standard timeframe.

This collaborative approach to onboarding explores the critical areas of Controls that seasoned specialists face daily. Each employee will interact with actual equipment, learn rsthand how to apply the product and then study the software used to control it. Upon completion of the accelerated program, you will have the opportunity to work within multiple Harris locations as an efficient systems specialist with on-the-job experience.

During the program, employees will work on a key project that builds during each phase of the rotation and will be presented to key management following all rotational assignments.
  • Ideal for graduating students looking to pursue a career in Building Automation/ Controls.
  • Advance quickly in your career by utilizing the learning model.
  • Program will be offered in our St. Paul or Salt Lake city offices.
  • Participants will be placed in a controls system specialist position within any Harris office
  • Lodging and travel covered by Harris during program.

Program Outline

This accelerated program is flexible based on your skillset and your prior knowledge base - the following is a basis of what you can expect in your training:
  • HARRIS SYSTEMS ORIENTATION - Learn general Harris business systems as well as the basics of HVAC installation: sequence testing, point to point verification, designing project graphics and repairs/service.
  • SAFETY - Receive safety training to stay current with injury prevention protocols. Work with service technicians to complete a pre-task plan that identifies potential safety hazards.
  • HVAC SYSTEMS LEARNING MODULE - Get an in-depth understanding of how Harris approaches installation, service and repair for the various product lines that partner with us.
  • MECHANICAL SYSTEMS SERVICE CROSS-TRAINING - Understand firsthand how service technicians discuss product issues and repairs and advise their customers by doing ride-alongs.
  • CONTROLS INTEGRATION - Diagnose, test and analyze the performance of system components, assemblies or systems. Learn how to create images for user interface and/or system dashboards.
  • NIAGARA OPERATING SYSTEM - Learn the details and functionality of the most complex software platform for building automation.
  • CERTIFICATION - Train to be certified in CIPer, Spyder, Niagara and GFX.

What we're looking for in you
  • Graduating student preferred with a degree in HVAC, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related
  • Strong interest in pursing a career in Building Automation/ Controls
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems: what they do and how they operate.
  • Basic understanding of computers, electronics, and electrical circuits and how they work together.
  • Basic understanding of building and construction materials, tools, and processes.
  • Basic understanding of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems including the various components and processes.
